The fact that highly trained and educated professionals need to work a 2nd job to make a living wage shows exactly why opting out of unions is making us weaker.
I work for the High School Athletics Department. I can pick sports or days i want to work. I'm now under the Athletic Director overseeing all other works at all games on campus.
Used to do Academic decathlon, Odyssey of the mind, but now it's Instacart.

I play in a band. Mostly on Friday and Saturdays but we have an occasional Thursday night gig that makes Friday an extremely long day
I do uber eats & door dash! It's not much but a quick way to make a little extra if I have the time that day!

I get commissioned for classroom and home art projects.
I have more side jobs than I can count. Most years I earn more money outside of education than from my salary.
I have a very odd situation. Rentals, farm land, work with parks and rec in town, and more.

The best side job is not to have one. I never have. Nor have I ever worked during the summer. My wife is a teacher too and neither has she. We have had 4 kids (the youngest one currently in college). We have no debts outstanding. If we can do it, nearly anyone can.
NC 1 I'm sorry for the loss of your child. I can't imagine. You keep saying it "can be done" though without offering how it was done. What personal circumstances permitted this for you that would have to exist for others for this to be doable. I too cannot fathom a way that a single teacher's salary would be enough to comfortably support a family without significant struggle and sacrifice on the provider's behalf.
I work for my communities recreation (city rec) and make up crafts for kids to do throughout the summer. We have two age groups 3-6 & 7-12. I order supplies, take pictures of all our camps we offer, make a yearly scrapbook of the summer, help with all the events we have. I LOVE it!!
I sell items from my home through an app called poshmark. Its always just enough money to put aside for special things
My favorite side job is a combo of coaching baseball and basketball. Same kids as either I’m currently teaching or will be in the future. Also one I love is running the clock for all varsity events. Great way to show interest in so many of my students and makes teaching them so much easier.

My best side job has just been private tutoring a couple of kids each year. It’s quick and easy money to make it over the hump. Right now Covid money is paying pretty great for after school tutoring which makes for longer school days, but no weekends!
