What is your firm doing to boost internal networking? How have you been meeting people within your firm but outside of your service line since covid started? Anything in particular you think works?

Nothing and none, I feel more isolated than ever. Then again, things are usually quiet from Jul-Sep. Also think this is largely dependent on project size/team, competency, practice etc. curious to see what others have experienced.

Hello,

I am a 3rd year insurance defense attorney with product and premise liability experience. Due to long-COVID, I am likely to lose my job.

The plan is to find a government position that would involve more substantive litigation and trial work, then leverage that into the private sector a few years down the line.

Any advice would be appreciated regarding networking, where to start, etc. Thank you.

There is almost nowhere to find reliable bonus information on Canadian firms. I’ve heard of year end bonuses ranging from 10-50% this year (not including Covid bonuses). Let’s start a thread posting year of call, rough billable hours worked and bonus as a percent of salary.

5 year call. 1850 hours. 10%.

How is your firm dealing with COVID-19? (Lay-off, pat cuts, working from@home, etc)

Do you think gig consulting would pick up considering it doesn’t matter post COVID !

Anyone else still required to work in the office despite a stay at home order? How are you handling that? We can 100% work from home, but can't because my boss isn't taking this seriously. These Covid numbers have me seriously worried that it's just a matter of time before someone in my office catches it.

Trying to get an idea of some comparables here for Canada:
Looking for :
- billable hour targets, bonus structures, whether your firm has provided some form of COViD bonus /retention bonus, and lastly, if your firm will be increasing associate salaries in 2022! It would be great if the firm name was mentioned as well.

Confession time. I absolutely despise flying. I go out of my way to avoid it. I will drive to a client overnight and not sleep before getting on an airplane. Unfortunately for the first time since COVID I have meetings that are too far to drive and am flying 4 different times this week. Brutal. I’m nauseous and can’t sleep. Any suggestions to ease the phobia quickly?! Help.

To those who got dogs during covid - how are you preparing to go about it when things go back to normal? I’ve been ‘leaving’ the house more while just going upstairs to my office and closing the door. What else can/should I do

My professional life at the moment is far from ideal. I’ve been on quarantine (long story, but a good one) for the last seven years. Royalties from my books don’t pay the bills. My entrepreneurial pursuits remain hampered. For the interim, I’ve been looking for a remote opportunity where I can leverage my skills in marketing, sales, social media, and elsewhere for a decent sum. I have a social media presence which, in recent years, reached millions. There has to be something exciting I can do.

Student loans—I currently have about 5 yrs left on my 10 yr private variable loan (originally at $101k, down to $58k). Rate is 3.50% right now. Can refinance as a 5yr fixed at 4.25%. Is it worth it? My interest rate will go up initially but assuming rates go up again it will save me $$$ later. Thoughts? I feel like it depends where the economy goes over the next several years.
