Saw an article about the chilling effect that the Big Law salary raises are having on in house hiring since associates cannot bear to take the pay cut. Do we believe this? This job is a lot better if you don't care about the bonus and hours requirement. I can pretty easily bill 1700 hours annually and my firm so far hasn't cared in the slightest. Worrying about hitting 2000 hours for the bonus used stress me out so much, and I just don't think it's worth it. Base salaries are ridiculous and way more than enough to finance my lifestyle.

How many matters is typical for one associate to handle (BL lit)? I know it is group-specific, but just trying to get a general idea. I’m a 2nd year and I am the only associate staffed on about 30 cases-meaning I keep track of all deadlines, do all day to day assignments, keep on top of following up with client/OC, and all research/drafting. Partners handle deps/court but that is about it. Is this a normal case load to be responsible for as a jr? I being dramatic by thinking this is too much?

My senior associate takes 1 week to get back to me with comments and then tells me that I need to turn the document asap. This has happened several times already and I’ve had to pull all nighters to meet these insane deadlines when it’s clear that they just waited until the very last minute to get back to me… any advice? I am a mid level and have received an offer from a regional big law firm in a non-market paying location. I believe the firm would be a great fit and the location is where I want to be. The biggest issue is money. I’d be lateraling from full cravath in a major market and the initial offer I received is a bit off that (read: 50% salary reduction). While the market is cheaper in some respects, housing is not. How far can I expect this firm to go to in terms of compensation? Any negotiation tips?
