What is your opinion on a MS social studies teacher having a confederate flag hanging in their classroom?

As a casual decoration, I would be concerned with possible commentary, however, in a social studies classroom, I think it has a good place there. The truth is, no matter how people feel about it, it is historically significant and being in a southern state, there may be personal history from the teacher's view and most likely community history as well. I've been in social studies classrooms that have pictures of world leaders including Hitler. Was he a horrible person that caused unnecessary harm...yes, but it is history and relevant for learning and creating a better future.

like

Sorry! I must have misread a previous comment. I do think it changes the situation a bit based on the location. I believe it still has a place, but I think that the location of the school does make a big difference and gives you more reason for asking questions.

I don’t teach Social Studies, but have mixed feelings about having this flag in the room. If it’s a decoration, no. If he has the flag because of a unit he is doing, I’m ok with that. This could foster a very informative discussion.

Depends on context. Are they studying the confederacy? Are all of the other flags hanging also? All year or just as an object lesson? Not enough information. We tend to knee-jerk reactions but context is everything.

Our 8th grade history classes study the Civil War.

like

No, I know it’s part of history but because of the culture of our country today there should not be a confederate flag hanging in any classroom. Think about this, it could be taken the wrong way as the teachers point of view which will cause a lot of trouble for that teacher.

like

True. I just feel like he should have more sense than this. I definitely would not want to invite that drama into my life, kwim?

like

It’s a pretty rude thing to do considering they know damn well how people feel about it.

likefunny

As someone said above context is everything. They do study and should discuss controversial and uncomfortable things in a history class. The why, how, and how long are important parts of the matter. If it is part of a lesson, it should be up for that lesson and then taken down when the class moves on. If it is not, if it is something that he hangs up to make a point about his personal politics, then it should not be up.

like

So are we saying we'd be cool with him hanging the Nazi flag when he covered WWII?

likesmart

"we" aren't saying anything about that. A pic of Hitler maybe, but it has to be contextually used. So many people have no context for their opinions. I think social studies is about learning the background for why it's a trigger, and what it meant beyond slavery. But I don't know this teachers context. So a conversation is necessary.

like

It's part of our country's history and as long as it's not the only one, I think it's okay. It serves a purpose in explaining our history and how far we have come from that time's believe systems.

like

It’s historically significant, it has been dragged across media like it’s verboten. Making decisions for teacher’s visual aides in a room relating to curriculum, is like pulling statues down from historical towns. Overboard. If he had a framed poster of Robert E Lee do we clutch our pearls? Inspire discussions/debates, and let the man teach.

I wouldn’t engage, there were a couple more really inappropriate responses from them and they were reported and deleted. It’s futile to try to speak sense to them.

like

As a teaching point I think you could explain having it out during a specific lesson but as a classroom decoration???????? Are you KIDDING????? I would cause a ruckus!

like

It’s 2021. How is this person not aware how wrong this is? And they’re an educator? Yikes!

like

Especially because what is generally considered the confederate flag is just the flag of one particular army and has been used by racists since to intimidate, there is pretty much no excuse in my mind. It isn't historically accurate to call it the confederate flag and no history teacher could reasonably feign ignorance of it's use since the civil rights era.

like

It’s history…. Can’t hide from historical facts.

Can't hide from historical facts, but I guess some can ignore them. Connecticut is on the money here.

Hello….so I went to open house the other night and specifically went to his class to meet him. He literally has every flag painted on each ceiling tile, flags everywhere. Apparently my child neglected to notice this?! He also must have seen me look at it and talked about there being uncomfortable conversations arising and they encourage open debates, etc. It made me think he was on here, lol. So I decided not to say anything yet.

Same! I’m so glad I waited to say anything lol

Thank you for all the helpful responses!! Phone call is def better than an email?

I just believe you start with talking to him. Then take more steps if necessary. I'm not defending him, but I don't want to just be a Karen immediately. I'd save that for after the conversation. Don't want to pull her out until she's actually needed. Lol

Under no circumstances should a confederate flag fly in a classroom. Not at all. If the teacher is teaching about the Civil War or something related to the Confederacy, then he/she can hold up or share a photo of the flag. The real thing - a physical flag - is different. Illustrating a lesson or topic is no excuse for making anyone uncomfortable in a classroom. In my district, having an emblem of hate displayed in my classroom could be a fireable offence.

Yikes. Nope!

I would never, but if he's had it there for years, the admin know it. Perhaps at some point he discusses it and the feelings people have about it.

Do they have any other participation trophies in there

Would this be the same as an English teacher having copies of any book ever banned in the classroom?

like

If those books have been used by racist groups for more than 60 years to spread hate and discord, then I think there would be a valid comparison. The flag in question only resurfaced in the civil rights era to be used for intimidating those who wanted POC to have the same rights as white folks. It was never even the flag of the confederate states, it was the battle flag of one particular confederate army. Prominently displaying and enshrining Mein Kampf would be just about the only comparable situation I can think of book wise.

Is that a joke? It’s a bad one.

Nope
