What is your take on cameras within the classroom setting? Does anyone have them already installed?

I have mixed feelings. on one hand I have nothing I'm ashamed of or hiding. However in agreement with a few others here that if my district has the money to install cameras to watch me , then why do we not have the money for extra teachers, TAs and smaller rooms? There would be o need for all those cameras if class sizes were in the correct limits.

I have them in my classroom, along with microphones (and microphones only- no video in restroom). I teach ECSE and to be honest, they don’t bother me one bit. It’s for myself as well as student safety. I like having them because I do have students who will scream “you’re hurting me - stop it!” At the top of their lungs even though no one is touching them. So, it makes my life easier and I don’t think twice about having them in my room.

like

I’ll also note that we have a special form for Sped rooms that goes home to all parents in my room notifying them of the equipment. And we have very specific policies as far as who can view footage, when it can be viewed, how the process takes place, etc. very very very detailed.

We have them in the halls, but not in the classrooms. BUT a lot of the teacher make the kids THINK there are cameras in the classrooms 😁.

I would do that especially if I would be absent. Students would message me and tell me everything and I would say it when I return the next day and they would be like how do you know that....my comment.."eyes are always watching."

I guess you can’t establish a relationship with your students based on trust if you need to have a spycam in the room. Initially it might have some impact due to new concept, but after a bit it won’t matter much to students. It could be used against teachers. Especially new teachers trying to develop and perfect their craft. The camera is on the teacher as well as the students. I think it’s an invasion of privacy. There is no research I can find that states that it leads to improvement in academic performance of students. There need to be significant Quantitative and Qualitative studies before embarking on such an undertaking!

We only have them in the halls and outside the campus. That would feel kinda like a violation if they were inside the classroom.

We use Sibme “for non-evaluative” feedback. However, how can one not judge another and have that in their head when doing other forms of walk-throughs or interactions even. It requires a lot of trust. And, re watching it on my own, I appreciate. I just don’t know how I feel about videoing all the time. I’m not sure it would remain “for feedback and learning” only. It seems really tempting to use it for walk-throughs and evaluations...very time efficient. I sometimes think they are trying to get us used to being videoed so it can move to fewer face-to-face interactions. I find it raises my suspicions for future use.

I don’t have anything to hide either but makes me uncomfortable admin would be watching my every move... I would rather spend the money on something like say reduced class size?

Don’t have them but act as if there’s always one on and you’ll never be sorry. When I was an undergraduate, I worked in a child development lab with children and we were constantly being observed by other students behind darkened windows so we had to assume that we were always being watched.

None in my room. We just had them installed in our building!!! They can put one in my room. Makes no difference to me! I have nothing to hide.

I tell my students that the motion sensor is a camera. Lol

At our school we have them in the halls but not the classroom

I have never had them in my classroom. There was one right outside my door in the hallway at my last school. I asked an administrator to lik and see who went in my room and stole something and they never did it. There were times I wished I had them and would have liked them hooked up to a live feed for all the parents to see all the crap their little angels did, but I don't know, if it came down to it, I think I might also have mixed feelings. I think no matter what, I would feel like someone didn't trust me. I'm not sure I could handle that long term.

We have them in our building. I’d be open to it and I know my neighboring teacher has asked for them! All of our students are special education and severe with severe mental illness so yes, we want them for our own safety! Lots of lying, manipulation, avoidance, control issues, vulger language, lack of coping skills....

Building, yes. Classrooms- NO FERPA

I thought about FERPA aswell since we even have some students that can't be photographed...so I was like this really makes no sense to me🤷🏻‍♀️

We have them in the self contained Special Ed classrooms for our protection as well as the students. There are strict guidelines on who and when footage can be viewed. We have cameras in the hallway and outside the school.

We have them in our building and around outside, but not in classrooms. It would be kinda nice sometimes, though, to catch students who steal and such. I’ve had an issue with this recently. Not a fun issue

No in my classroom!!

We have the best cameras. The kids are not ever not camera unless they are in the restroom of course. It’s good because we can see what the teachers are doing as well as clears up cases where we need to find out what really happened. Also Incase if an emergency/ intruder.

We recently had something that looks like a camera installed and we all freaked out about it, then we found out it was a temperature sensor

funny

My school has them in the hallways but not in the classroom. I honestly don’t know how I feel about them in the classroom. I have nothing to hide so it wouldn’t matter

like

It depends on what they are watching for and how often they check. I think it keeps and honest person honest, not sure it will make a difference for those with issues. I’m not sure they would be watching the students at my school. 🤷🏼‍♀️ Mixed feelings.

My daughter just attended a new teacher workshop at a ROE. A Superintendent presented (not hers) and told this room full of new teachers, “Real teachers get to school at 7:00 am and go home at 8:00 pm.” Really?? As a veteran teacher of 26 years, I was appalled! Makes sense why new teachers are leaving the classroom in their first five years and why we have a teacher shortage in Illinois with those type of expectations.
