I think product management is the best. You still work corporate and don’t need to sustain yourself like starting your own company will. Most work 40 hours or waaayy less depending on the company, project, snd product requirements. All you do is make sure the product performs well through different ways but if it doesn’t then it all falls on you. BUT the nice thing is everyone on the team usually wants to keep their job so everyone does their work well so usually won’t be a big issue

This thread is pretty obviously a consulting bowl and not a finance one. You can easily do this being a successful wealth manager or a role in the business of getting financial clients. Kills me to say it, but a decent sized book of business at Northwestern Mutual can make someone over $500k without really doing anything. The downside is you have to build that up over time, and you get paid pennies while you’re getting to that point.

Owning your own company

How did you do it? What exactly the company is doing?

Hight end hookers have a lot of flexibility. They travel a lot too. Almost like consulting.

Yeah but the constant fear of getting arrested would be a real downer.

Become a senior exec and then start half ass’ing your job.

Nice progress JPM1 👏👍 Are you based in NYC?

Only one that I could think of is software engineering

Yeah but no one works 40 hours a week or less, it’s almost always more. Sheesh even Linus or Guido probably work more than that, to answer the OP I think if you’re going to do what you love what you’re working on, expect to grind until the day you die.

Plastic surgeon

Plastics is still surgery. Even as an attending, you're starting your day at or before dawn. My wife's med school classmate is a plastic surgery resident in Chicago and constantly complains how the hours are hellish and even if you go into private you're still a surgeon and working surgeon hours. Only exception may be if you're completely elective outpatient only doing simple boob jobs. The really efficient plastics can do a boob job in 15/20 mins, that's $5k-$10k cash right there.

Start a cult.. earn millions.. it won’t even feel like you’re working.

Labor is a reasonably efficient market. It’s not perfect obviously, but in broad strokes it mostly works. That means there simply do not exist jobs which pay a lot for little work. People would do them for less, or work harder, until comp moved to be in line with the broader market. The exceptions pretty much all boil down to luck.

I think mck was talking about producing a movie. Which depending on your role isn’t that much money and you can spread the risk across the team with backend payments especially if you are doing something with non union actors. The odds of being successful are quite low though :)

I disagree with the statement that "labor markets are efficient" and that "people are rewarded in proportion to how hard they work". People can be rewarded way out of proportion to the work they do if they can scale it. If I make 1 person 10% more efficient, that isn't worth much. If I do it for 100k people, I make $10m/year because I'm a CEO. If I'm a street performer and entertain 20 people on the street, I don't get paid much. If I do the same thing on NBC, I get paid way more. If I'm a wealth manager and take 1.5% of $1m, that's $15k/yr. Make the same decisions with $100m, and I'm making $1.5m.

I wouldn’t consider Speculating in Bitcoin and holding for 3 years in any hard work correlation or market efficiency theory. That’s just luck. Agree with the rest
