What flexibility are you all talking about here? The flexibility to be in the office until night for majority of the year? The flexibility of not being able to make weekend plans near quarters and tax season?
@KPMG1 - people who advance in private are not working 9-5. They work just as many hours, if not more, than we do. Don't compare your workload to the 45yr old acctg Manager at your client that hasn't had a promotion in 10yrs. Compare yourself to the 35 yo director who is a rising star at the Company. In private nobody is going to "push" you toward getting promotions or higher roles, and as a result you have plenty of people who are comfortable settling on somewhere and coasting. The ones who are driven to rise though work their asses off just like we do.
I rather sit 9-5 with no flexibility but knowing that I have free evenings and weekends. I need my piece of mind.

1 year in PA is worth 2-3 in private
Nothing. I just accepted a position in industry for a 28% pay increase and far less hours. Bye.
Flexibility in public > private
Nothing decent in private to go to? I've tried.
I think you have to decide what you want. PA is never going to be a 9-5 job. If that is what you want, and there is nothing wrong with that, you should ditch PA asap. PWC1 is correct though. I see it from someone who has been around a long time. I had some friends jump out early and wanted that stable 9-5 life and years and years later they still have it but at a price.. a price they were happy to pay. They aren't in the higher ranks.. they are rank and file employees maybe making a bit more year over year. They aren't making near what they would make in PA. Others jumped out because they liked the work in industry better but they were driven and worked just as hard as I was over the years and they rose up high.. and are high level in industry. Then there is me. I never wanted a 9-5 job. I love the challenge PA is, I have traveled around the world, love that I have had so many clients over the years. And I made partner. You have to decide what you want in life. There is no right or wrong answer.
Nothing wrong with coasting at all. Just trying to make sure people are comparing apples to apples. If you want to coast you can def be in private and be comfortable. If your goal is to be a VP or similar, you should not be expecting to achieve that working 9-5. I'm not taking a dig at the former, everyone has their own personal priorities. I just think it's important to acknowledge.
That is because you're an associate AA1. Flexibility is something you earn over time not something you're entitled to on day 1. As a parent of 2 I can say the flexibility in PA is tremendous/far better than what you get in industry.
What is so wrong with coasting. When y'all have kids you will long for a 9-5; kids are full time job unless you have trophy wife at home who does all the hard work for you.
In a 'normal' job you would go to a doctors apt with your kid and then work the remainder of the day, and not have to work all night to make up for it.
Yeah they key word is "work". The flexibility to work insane hours, just at a different place and a different time than 9-5.
Being able to take a sabbatical, longer vacation times in general, etc. are the only advantages of public. I love having my life back, but I also feel a bit bad about the drop in vacation time I now have. On the plus side, literally every weekend feels like vacation compared to PA because I don't work at all.
^ Well, if you don't work weekends then you do have a longer vacation time in total than in public.
I am an SM. Compared to my friends in private who have progressed to similar levels (I.e. Director and up) I have significantly more control over my schedule/flexibility to work where I want how I want when I want. I work a lot of hours, yes. So do they.
I have never seen client's in private not taking time off for doctor's appointment or any major life events or not working from home. What more?
I don't understand the flexibility every talks about either. The only flexibility I have is coming in whenever I want as long as it's before 930-10 am. There is flex time in industry too. And most entry level industry jobs start at 15 days vacation. I miss the flexibility in my private job of having a doctors apt and not having to use PTO or make up the hours. The good things about PA include higher starting salaries, professional development, quick promotions, and exit opps.
