I have heard that they value the scientific background for the DD aspect of pharma/biotech so it sounds like you have that. I think some sort of transactions/investment banking experience would be a good complementary skillset for that. But wonder if you can forego the transactions type skillset and lean on your scientific background to get a foot into the space. Others will likely have better advice.
While the OP has the academic background it's important to have DD project experience (commercial/pipeline landscape, epi, rx trends, pricing, market research to feed the model and actual modeling as mentioned etc). Re: soft skills, if you are okay as a consultant socially that's enough to get the job. When on the job however, being able to facilitate / project manage with senior folks across multiple functions even if it may not be your job can be handy.
Modeling above all else for both scenarios since you already have the PhD
Financial: valuation, portfolio and deal modeling. Be able to demonstrate skill in calculating NPVs and DCFs; not sure that your current work shows that expertise. Basically the transactional skill set A1 mentioned.
