What level would be the best time to apply for an MBA (Top 10). Specifically, where is the balance between having solid work experience, but still being young/new enough to not be pigeon holed?

5 years. However, if you are in audit or tax, I am not sure top 10 MBA programs will consider those service lines as "solid work experience." These programs typically seek candidates coming out big consulting firms.

What's considered a high GMAT score? And should you retake it if you took it a few years ago?

Applied after 3 years. Got in to #1. If you've waited until after year 5 to apply, you've waited too long

Audit. Above avg gmat for top 3. Differentiating factors are unique to everyone, so mine won't help you but I'm sure you have some. If you don't, top schools are hard unless you killed the gmat

Yes. Average at top programs is 720/730

Thanks for the response, and yeah that's what I've heard regarding work experience. I'm audit, but I plan to seek a transfer into advisory or otherwise work to differentiate myself

I would look into what the MBA program your firm has because a lot have programs with the big 4. I would agree you need to do some things outside of work to differentiate yourself and have high GMAT scores.

May I ask your specifics? Service line/GMAT/significant differentiating factors?

You need above 700 on GMAT to be competitive

Damn, so close with 690

KPMG 2, so you had above 700?
