In my case my parents forced me to do something with my life, after learning to be a functional human being thanks to the discipline that military life imprinted on me, I can say that I would never have chosen it, but it was the smartest step of my life.
All the men in my family are military or police officers at different levels, I as a woman accepted the challenge and I am the first military woman in 4 generations of officers. I am in love with what I do, I was part of the war in Afghanistan and although I still have nightmares about it, I believe my upbringing prepared me to face everything in service life.
Normally, a person's first choice is not the army, but it is also normal that they tell you that it was not their first choice but it was the best of their life, that's what my patients say, on the other hand, you have to understand that certain lives need discipline and order to get the best of each person, and you get that easily in the army.
Most guys seem to have a really inspiring answer for this but I had no prospects as a teenager and couldn't see myself achieving much of anything, so I just figured "what have I got to lose?" It was the best thing I've done with my life, looking back. Taught me what it means to really be a part of something and to have a family.
I wanted to avoid working at a burger joint, to be honest, and it seemed like a good alternative. I certainly haven't regretted the decision, the pay is reasonable and turnover is really low!
I come from a military family and it was always kind of expected that I would join up at some point. I still got ragged on a bit because my Dad was in the Army, and I told him jokingly that I had to rebel somehow (really, I just liked the programs offered by the Navy better). It's been pretty good. Not for everyone, but works well for me.
