Good manager - someone who knows the work (ie. If nobody showed up for work, they can jump in and do the work). Also someone who has empathy and compassion (ie. Doesn’t treat workers like robot machines). My current manager lacks both of these traits and I think they actually go hand in hand. She doesn’t appreciate the work that we do (she thinks it’s easy) so she keeps piling on more and more work and actually tells us we shouldn’t complain and be thankful for a job. Because of this, department morale is quite low.
We are hoping the same. Since early last year we began submitting multiple compliance and HR complaints but so far nothing has happened. These people don’t deserve to be in a leadership position at all. Hope it works out for you all.
Being organized and being able to listen, respond, and adapt - good manager. Anything else - bad manager.
I like it short simple and sweet!
Empathy families and employees get sick, make sure everyone is heard some people say stuff about others because they are afraid others will do well so get the whole story. Distribute work evenly. I worked in a place where I worked 10 days straight I fail asleep setting up and was wrote up and given the option to resign or get fired.
I am so sorry to hear that once again the only people that can cure your burn out are management and administration.
For a nursing manager, I think it's terrible when someone is biased and plays favorites.
Oh yeah that’s the worst cause someone could be a horrible employee but they are sycophant to the boss so they keep their jobs. I think that is really bad for employee morale.
Personally, I need someone who is there to provide support and guidance, but trusts me and doesn't micromanage. It's also important that a manager be willing to roll up his or her sleeves and get their hands dirty. I can't stand people who move up the ranks and suddenly act like they're above doing the actual work.
Personally, I think micromanaging makes a bad manager. You have to trust your employees to do their work and do it to the best of their ability. I prefer a hands off approach and always provide feedback so my employees can get better at their jobs.
A good manager has the qualities of a good leader, which entails knowing when to speak and knowing when to listen. Someone who knows the boundaries of being a good teammate and when they need to step up and take the lead.
Sorry, I entered my answer too early. Anyways, a bad manager is someone who doesn't know how to listen. Bad managers tend to shout commands, rather than make suggestions that make a subordinate feel competent with what they're doing. A bad manager does not know his teammates best qualities.
A great manager wants you to do better and listen to your suggestions rather than rudely pointing out your mistakes to you when everyone else is listening. A bad manager does the exact opposite.
Being present, supportive of your staff, being understanding, don't micromanage, don't point out the wrong, without adding Positive feedback. Read articles about your leadership style, remember that you're leadership wake will follow you. Ultimately remember that we're working with 5 generations of employees, everyone's learning style aren't the same.
