Really a tier rating is better than whatever arbitrary “top X.”
T1: HSW
T2: Rest of M7 + Tuck/Haas
T3: Ross/Fuqua/SOM/Darden/Stern
T4: Johnson/McCombs/Anderson/Tepper/KF/Goizueta (and I guess Foster and Marshall?)
Each tier is a soft cutoff for certain positions, like VC for T1- you can get it elsewhere but it’s more tough.
There was a PQ infographic summarizing the top MBA tiers. It was:
1. Harvard and Stanford
2. Booth, Wharton, Tuck, Kellogg, MIT, Berkeley
3. Fuqua, Darden, Ross, Yale SOM, Cornell and NYU
Columbia...
Firstly, it’s avocado*. Secondly, yes. Haas and Tuck are squarely considered top 7/8, but Tuck is actually ahead of Haas. Tuck @ Dartmouth was the first American institution to offer an advanced management degree - not just the oldest Ivy but also oldest US school (1900). No, it’s not Wharton - Wharton established the first undergraduate business school in late 1800s. If you analyze the cumulative rankings in the last few decades, Tuck has always been top 5 and 8 in almost every ranking, and it’ll likely get higher in the coming years
Disclaimer: Stern grad here but know a fuck load about MBA programs.
So are we saying Tuck / Avacado= M7?
A2 - absolutely. In my opinion, it’s HS and then Wharton, Tuck, Booth, Kellogg, MIT, Haas are all nearly equivalent with strengths by region/industry. Would definitely choose Tuck or Haas over many of the non HS M7 schools
Assoc3 nailed it. Frankly, I don’t think Tuck gets the same level of press as other top 8 MBA programs because of its location...being “tucked” away in NH has tremendous pros but also quite a few cons. Same case with Haas - it’s the only other west coast program in the top bracket besides Stanford and gets overshadowed.
I, personally, did not get accepted to Tuck but have phenomenal respect for the program. I would’ve chosen it over Wharton (def wouldn’t have over H or S, though, lol!) It’s incredibly prestigious on many levels (reference my post above), but it’s honestly their close knit community that makes every other top MBA envious. Their alumni network is one of the smallest yet most powerful because alums break down walls to help their people, and that further helps their employment stats, etc. I know of dozens of folks who chose Tuck over Wharton, Booth, Kellogg, Haas and Sloan, and none of them regret their decision one bit. Was actually speaking with a friend over the weekend who chose Tuck over Wharton and Kellogg. So there ya go!
Yea I don’t really understand the prestige factor for the M7 vs Tuck/Haas. It’s just a group of schools that work together. I’d choose Tuck over Columbia without even thinking for consulting. But I’d take Columbia over all but HSW for finance. A little tougher, but I’d probably choose Haas over any school besides HS if I wanted to be on the west coast. It’s all about your goals and fit within that tier, imo
This coming from someone attending a top 15 school in August but not Tuck/Haas, so unbiased
Top 10 fluctuates. Usually M7 plus Haas and Tuck then one of Ross/Fuqua/SOM/Darden
But is the prestige of Tuck and Haas actually comparable to M7, even if rankings suggest so? Like if you had to choose between any non HSW M7 and Tuck/Haas, would you choose the latter?
