Majored in statistics. But I don’t think it was a stretch since a lot of our operate projects need reporting and visualizations with large amounts of data. But that said, I’m not really doing cyber I guess. Just analytics where I need to understand cyber concepts
Interesting! How i learn what you know. Very cool
I have no Computer Science or Engineering Degree, nor any Security or Law Enforce background, I am a Mathematician with an MBA specialized on Numerical simulations programming and after 10 year as a Digital Forensics practitioner in a Big 4 as a consultant, then manager, director and MD position I got hired at IBM as Security Associate Partner.
How did you get into digital forensics? How’d you land that first gig? This sounds like a cool area
I’m female. I was working as an admin for an engineering firm and had a Security+ book on my desk. A man walked past and said he was hiring for his team and would I like to join. I’ve never been so lucky and wouldn’t be where I was without him.
Is being female supoose to play a role in this story…
Rotation as a mgmt trainee. Knew nothing about cyber and fell in love. I love what I do.

Don't listen to them.....go do implementation work. You will never get ahead by doing what the crowd tells you to do
IT Audit Big 4 -> IT Audit Industry -> Cyber at the Big 4
I'd love to connect with you and discuss more about this! I'm just under 3 years working on IT Audits and I'm tired of dreaming about walkthroughs!
Came in with an international relations background so my understanding of cyber was more in the context of geopolitics and cyber attacks as a tool within that. Also had a couple years IT operations experience.
There are really a lot of parallels. I’ve noticed quite a few people in cyber with our kind of background! Makes sense as cyber is becoming more and more of a tool to influence the power dynamic.
Friend told me to stop limiting yourself to just IT jobs and apply to cybersec
For folks looking to get into cybersecurity feel free to message me. I have a couple mentor spots open. https://www.linkedin.com/posts/activity-6877357272872337408-C8hd

Got friend’s resume ~3 yrs back and added some bullet points to my non IT resume to get 1st helpdesk job.
I accidentally walked into a KPMG informational session on an evening when I wasn’t even supposed to be on campus.
Huh, Dante Hicks is a cyber professional. Good on you man
Worked at a new firm with a bunch of really uptight ex-EY cyber peeps. They were having daily standup meetings and assigning themselves work. I was like.. man I wish I had that discipline. Asked them if I could join their team.
Honda mechanic.
Spent 20 yrs turning a wrench at a dealership. Master’s certification, left as a shop foreman. I was tired of the wear and tear on my body. So back to school, 2.5 yrs at PSU and hired by Big K. To your second question, soft skills like time management, critical thinking, etc. we’re fully transferable. I had to diagnose and repair your vehicle as quickly and accurately as possible, or I lost time and money.
I was arrested during part of operation Sun Devil and figured switching sides would be a good job opportunity 😉 and out of sheer luck it became a career.

Plaintiff's attorney
I have a marketing background. A friend of mine invited me to his church and the head pastor got promoted to senior manager of his team. He said my social skills were something he’s never seen and he wanted that in his team.
Electrical/Nuclear Engineering
1st job out of college was SharePoint admin (sheer blessing/schools alum network. got trained on job. Received a clearance). Required to obtain Sec+ on job which garnered interest in cyber. Left within 6 months for BAH doing same work. Networked way onto 1st cyber project. Consider myself technical but not HIGHLY technical (i.e. writing my own scripts, exploits and what not…willing to learn this for sure). Been in the IT/Cyber space professionally for 5+yrs. Open to network/mentorship
Nobody else knew how to do it at my industry firm and I was bored of data analytics
