I go to the museum a lot. I have membership at the art institute and I try to go to a lot of the presentations and openings. I’ll meet friends at the member lounge, grab a drink and go wandering (sans drink) especially on Thursdays when the museum is open late. I go to the aquarium as well. I’ve been trying to find some lectures I can attend for new books and things like that. I’ve also started investing in games so people can come over and I’m going to have movie nights where my millennial friends can understand all the Molly Ringwald angst and that Winona Ryder isn’t just the mom on Stranger Things. 🤦🏻♀️
I want to be your friend!
Every now and then a few mates and I will pick a random neighborhood and learn some of the history and just spend the whole day there. We just started doing it deliberately, so far Pullman, Pilsen, Edgewater. Chi has a TON of cool city history to tap into. I agree with A1 that we have great museums, I like MCA too.
It’s a really good question though, I’m curious what others do too
Did a walking tour of Pilsen through the Chicago Architecture and it was AWESOME. Spent the rest of the day visiting museums (Mexican art museum there is free and awesome), shopping, eating and exploring the area.
Live music, baby! 🤘
Concert season now, so wherever the bands I want to hear play. I also frequent the symphony and lyric opera - love it all.
The beach in the summer. Yachting in the summer. Ice skating at Maggie Daley in the winter.
The more endurance sports inclined (myself included) will try to run on the lake shore trail but even renting a divvy bike and going on a ride north to Northwestern or south to Jackson Park (hidden gem) is worth it. If hiking is your thing you’re kind of SOL though

Regular there?
In the winter it’s harder but you can go bowling, axe throwing (surprisingly much more fun than I’d thought), Whirleyballing, rock climbing or ice skating. There are tons of baking, cooking and art classes- look for them at Eatly or the art museum. Go see a comedy show, play or a movie. I check around the smaller theaters in the area and see if there’s anything interesting. Saw live reading of Tiny Beautiful Things at Victory Gardens Theater and it was awesome. SoFar Chicago is super fun- you go to an odd venue and listen to live music but you don’t know who is playing until you get there. Game Nights at a local cafe (kibbitznest, relo’s). In the summer I go on divy bike rides to Promontory point or Northwestern and have picnics by the lake.
Garfield Conservatory is an oasis off the green line. It's summer 365 days a year there.
I also like the Art Institute - especially the mini rooms. So cool! Knitting nights at the library, running along the river or the lake when it's not winter, all the sports all games... There's so much to do!
Go to the park at night and swing. It feels so liberating.
