What (other than the money) motivates you to stay in BigLaw or the practice of law in general?

I’ve been reconsidering law in general. There are definitely some people who love legal analysis and I respect that. But I thought I was becoming a lawyer to be an advocate, but most of what I do feels like mind gymnastics instead. Maybe I’m not cut out for this idk.

like

Being able to point to a concrete thing and say I helped build that (whether it's a product, company, facility, power project, etc.). I didn't get an engineering degree, and I don't think I am ready yet to build my own business but the ability to help others achieve their goals and make things happen is rewarding. Law is just the skill set and the role that I felt made the most sense for me to do that. Also, yes, the intellectual challenge in the sense that we are solving problems and that requires getting to know people's business, collaborating, weighing risk-reward and applying skills/knowledge/practice to different issues. BigLaw provides a pretty good platform to do all of that or at least get the foundation to do all of that in another space down the road.

The partners I work for and the other associates in the group. My supervising partner (also female) is an amazing champion for us, understands that real life happens, and treats us like adults. I’m afraid to leave. I take vacations now and no one bothers me. Also afraid if I leave I’ll lose that. And I enjoy the work, its consistent enough that I feel comfortable and varied enough I don’t get bored.

I came too far to back out. Law school, the bar, getting the job - too much blood, sweat, and tears to abandon. Changing paths to something less prestigious would feel like a failure, internally and externally.

like

I fear we are in good company.

Prestige.

If I could do something else, I would.

I find it intellectually stimulating and love being an advocate for others.

Thanks, C1 :) I really appreciate the encouragement. You’re probably right.

We’re helping people build things which serve the public

Money, and being proud of where I work (though it’s not necessarily biglaw related but coming out of a Tier 2 school, people assume (not wrongly) that I worked really hard to be able to make it), great mentorship

The health benefits. My firm covers IVF and has a great maternity leave. I was planning on leaving within a year of having our baby but I just lost our baby more than halfway through pregnancy so I’ll be here longer than planned. I don’t want to move to another firm or company because I’m senior enough here where I can come and go as I please and often can pick and choose what I work on

Any advice on how to handle this situation at work. The project I am on is behind schedule, but my part of the project is not. So, I have been asked to help my teammates up to speed. I’m almost done helping one. I’m just wondering, when it comes to performance review time would it help me get promoted? I stepped up when several people left the company that was a part of the project. Any ideas on how to make sure my efforts are recognized?

A senior partner from a very small boutique wants me to go and head up a new practice there. I’d come in as a principal, and become a partner in 1-2 years. The TC is 50% higher than my current, but I know partners at my firm make probably3-5x partners at theirs. I like the idea of accelerating my career, but also don’t want to accelerate into a dead end. Anyone done anything similar and can share experiences?

How do you cope when you are extremely worried about your child’s health, while searching for a new job and dealing with a long list of to-do’s at work? Anyone get bad migraines that are debilitating and affect your ability to work? How did you approach this at your office, if at all? I’ve listened recently to several conversations about quality of work product issues during WFH. Some people say they have not given feedback (giving someone a pass) because of the need to be kinder and be mindful of personal challenges (childcare etc) and then I read an article/study about how lack of constructive feedback for women is hurting women’s advancement and how important feedback is for develo. I see both sides. Have you changed whether/how you provide feedback?

Pregnant/ first trimester in big law. Got informed I should be taking point on some aspects of a major trial, set right around my due date. I don’t want to announce I’m pregnant yet, and don’t want to get pulled from matters so early. But I also don’t want partners to resent that I knew I would be gone for this trial and that I didn’t tell the team sooner, so a different attorney could have taken point from the start (rather than me having to catch someone up in a few months).
