What professional advancement options are there for a classroom educator like myself? Are advanced degrees necessary, and are there opportunities outside of becoming a school principal? I’ve been teaching a few years now and I don’t plan on leaving the classroom anytime soon, but I want to know what my options are for later on in my career. Thanks!

I taught for 9 yrs and then became a Reading Recovery/ESL support teacher for 10 yrs. when my district stopped the Reading Recovery program 5 yrs ago I became a full time ESL support teacher. This year they changed my job duties to coaching teachers instead of working with children. I’m not sure I like it yet but I’m 3 yrs from retirement and I don’t want to go back in the classroom. I didn’t plan to leave the classroom 15 yrs ago but the opportunity presented itself and I tried it. I would just keep your eyes open for different opportunities and be willing to try something new.

There are always opportunities. But I always understand that there are sharks everywhere. If you keep what’s best for our students in your direction, that is the truly way to be. I wishYou well

Stay in the classroom.

I definitely understand that sentiment. Is it possible to still have a huge impact on students outside of the classroom?

My district does have specialists that help coordinate subjects like Math and Literacy across the district. We also have some who are interventionists in the building so they don’t have an assigned class but work with small groups from all over the building and help teachers who may need some support. These don’t require an administration degree but they do typically have some kind of specialist training.

You could always try jobs with different responsibilities as well. Academic coach is an option, but also maybe a specials teacher, an ESOL teacher, reading or math intervention. There are quite a few options outside of admin.

There are leadership opportunities in many organizations. You can stay in the classroom and make a larger impact in your district, state, and nationally. Find some organizations you believe in and get involved! The rewards are amazing!

Do you have any special skills or training, degrees to go with it? I was a regular Biology teacher until I found out about CTE programs in my state, and I switched to becoming a Biotechnology teacher. It helped that I had a Master’s in Biotechnology, and I had to go through a whole set of courses to get licensed, but it was worth it. I was able to build my program from scratch, I have a good deal of autonomy in designing my curriculum, and I usually have smaller numbers of motivated students who chose my program. If I wanted, I could pursue leadership positions in our teacher’s union, or even administration. Another advantage of CTE education is that I have students enrolled for grades 9-12, so I have more time to influence my students.

Hi there! I attended a virtual robotics workshop last week. I learned a lot and especially enjoyed connecting with others who were using robots in their classroom. I hope you join the discussion and we can find a way to support each other.

Our school uses Foss Kits for Science and I was told when students return, we will need to sanitize all items before and after each use. This doesn’t seem possible in a middle school setting where each period has a 4 minute break and 25 students in each period. What do you do in your classroom to minimize the amount of work needed to clean and sanitize items. I don’t want to short change the students’ hands-on experiences.
