Product manager is unrelated to project management. Knowing customer needs, wants and values is key to product management. Understanding channels and their motivations is required for getting the product ro market. Then full understanding of technical tradeoffs and timing to address those needs through the channels while ensuring your competitors are held at bay is critical.
I don’t really do much project management. I make sure I understand exactly what needs to get built and then focus on communicating it very clearly to the tech PM and project managers so they can work with engineering to estimate effort. I look at places where we are spending a lot of time working around technical debt and get the leadership and engineering buy-in to invest time in a project to help solve it. I make recommendations on features to trim from the roadmap or look for areas where work can be moved to a different project because there’s more synergy. I may catch up with engineers to see if there’s ideas that need business support and can be turned into a new product or feature. I collaborate with other product managers to understand how we can continue splitting our products into micro-services
