The ability to nurture a concept and coach creatives
Emotional intelligence. The ability to work hard without stressing out and passing the stress around to the rest of the team. Empathy for difficulties their team might be having. Knowing when to stand up for themselves and their teams and how to do it effectively and respectfully

Presenting skills
#1? Knowing good vs. bad. Simply put, a good eye. It’s what separates the duds from the legends.
Followed closely by an innate ability to sense and project an idea’s potential. Even in its rawest, brainfart form. Some CDs need ideas to be far more “baked” than others. Which is a common weakness.
Followed closely by the people skills to help develop good ideas into great ads.
In my experience, a nice CD who pushes mediocrity aren’t what most creatives want. At all. They’ll take a harsh critic with a good eye over that any day. But the ideal is a genuinely nice person with a good eye.
A harsh hack? Run away.
Oh, and the moxie to sell great work helps too. Not just salesmanship. Most anyone can sell crap ads and fancy themselves a salesman. Selling great work takes a certain moxie.
