What is your best classroom management trick?

In high school I’m affected by the fact that my students have different classes and not all teachers at consistent. I’m also affected by sports and other extra curriculars. At my school teachers don’t run detention, so I stopped using it. My consequences had to be something felt in my classroom
Our school creates a behavior matrix, it lists consequences for typical behaviors in the classroom, cafeteria and yard. I like it because it keeps me consistent and equitable, even if I woke up cranky!
This is the cheat sheet. The actual behavior matrix has EVERY behavior we could think of. This one was made bigger and laminated for each classroom.
We aren’t allowed to suspend or expel students in our programs or have families come pick their children up. Honestly, it gave us an opportunity to form some systems as a team that helped us to feel safe. Here are three things that helped:
1. Develop a Crisis Plan: A team including teachers, administrators, social worker, and behavior specialist developed a written plan that aligned with our state regulations and school policies detailing what we would do in the event of extreme behavior. I think this is every bit as important as having a plan for a fire drill. All staff were trained and it helped with consistency.
2. We invested in two trainings: Non-violent Crisis Intervention (for teachers) and Conscious Discipline—a program that teaches self-regulation
3. Monthly leadership team meetings—-Included teachers, admin, social worker, school psychologist, behavior specialist, paraprofessionals, etc. Itstarted out as a few minutes tacked onto our staff meeting, eventually became its own meeting. We created expectations as a team, talked about hurdles and what worked, and made actionable steps for going forward. We also eventually involved community mental health partners, pediatricians, etc.
