What salary do you feel like you need to make to finally feel it’s “enough”. I used to say once I get to 100k it’s enough and now I feel like I need double to be comfortable!

$300k

I feel like this would shut me up too. Sad I felt that way about 100k not even 5 years ago.

like

I feel like hitting 150k would be the sweet spot. Probably way less if I moved to a city with a lower cost of living but where's the fun in that?

like

My wife and I now track spending, we haven’t done it before. We are at 550k ish AGI now and feel some pressure since we don’t have the money in hand and it’s all in accounts so it doesn’t feel real. I grew up poor and the hardest thing to break is working crazy hours to “survive”. I have lost many friends and family due to working too hard, but my family won’t go without. I take care of both of our parents too when we can. Vehicles, nice dinners, cell phone bills, and hopefully more. Everything has a cost so even when I’m making 400k + my stress is through the roof. My motto is have 3-5 great friends and live life. My family comes first, everything else is second.

With 10 yrs of this income, I’ll be doing well, and still complaining I bet lol.

like

Love this. I keep feeling like once I get to the “next step” it’ll be better but instead the bar just gets higher

Well, 100k used to be enough. Not anymore due to inflation and cost of living. Simple rule of thumb, you should be making 3 times the average rent of a nice two bedroom apartment per month to be able to say that you are well off. If you do and you are not happy, then it is your fault. If you don't, then it is your employer's fault.

like

good rule of thumb to go by

Ha, that is pretty much exactly what we pay as well. My husband and I don't love our home but it works for two small kids. We will need something larger as they become preteens but thinking that will be affordable once our kids start school. It's insane that we both pay more for daycare than our home each month.

like

Same!! We definitely need to move into a bigger home but it’s impossible right now. I don’t know how people who make half of what we do are affording it. It is crazy right now!!

So let’s say a few years ago you were making 125k and you want to maintain that standard of living today after inflation. You now need to make 150k, now keep in mind that is without raising your standard of living. So if you are not making 150k now your standard of living has declined. And your employer does not care.

like

I pay almost that in daycare for two kids (1 and 3) in the Midwest.

like

Between the 2500 for daycare and the 2k for mortgage it’s half our take home pay. I can’t wait for kindergarten

like

400K would be the sweet spot in NYC for a family of 3 (1.5 year old toddler with FT nanny costing $5K/month and on track to attend private pre-school next year which will cost $50k/year 😫)

like

M1 what do you and your spouse do for work?

I feel like it's all relative. I used to think $100K would mean I made it made it. I make less than that now but I am very comfortable. Working from home and living in the Midwest where it's pretty cheap to live makes a difference. I live in a nice house but it's not extravagant. I don't go on Europe vacations every year but live a happy comfortable life. My largest expense is daycare though for two kids.

Daycare definitely kills us too. I’m in New England and it’s over 2500 a month for two under 4. I so badly want one more but we would drown.

The more you make, the more you spend. Cut costs instead of raising stress.

$100k was good 20 years ago, adjusted for inflation is like $175k now.
Also this number depends on your location, $200k is probably great for midwest and $500k is passable for NYC/Bay Area

Please add whether single, single with kids, or married joint income with kids. This is way too broad. I am single with no children and 1 dog. The cost of pet food, pet care, pet services (hotel, grooming, and walks has skyrocketed. Alone, I could just get by at $85-90k. With the dog, getting by is 92-95k. "Enough" would be 115k minimum. Children are much more expensive and I think I can safely assume 1 adult plus child is around the range of 120k (at least). That is factoring in activities, food, clothes, and all else.

Same - I make 115k in a LCOL city. I want to make things easier for my kids, like us paying for college. We are only able to save a very little bit each month. We don’t take fancy vacations, we take drivable vacations. I feel like we are living above average and I am very thankful for that, but in order to make things easy, I would say 200k would be the sweet spot - and not paying for daycare (as that cost is ridiculous).

Just landed an interview for a QAE position at Amazon after a 1hour phone screen and wanted to know more about Amazon's salary structure and what would be a good starting point to ask for. I did some reading about it and it seem rather confusing.

Also, what should I expect from the interview (that may take 6 hours according to the email)? Anyone have experience that could give some input?

Looking for Advice: I am an HR Associate at a midsized company. I was just informed that our HR Generalist put in their resignation. My boss (HR Director) let me know that I am going to be taking on more responsibilities (previous responsibilities of the Generalist role). I’m wondering… should I request a role change or ask for a bigger salary/more compensation? What is appropriate in this situation?
Any advice is appreciated. :)

Need advice: One of my friends in infosys got an offer from another company for 50% hike. Infy is offering rsu stock options for the difference amount for retaining but not ready to match the salary. Is it wise decision to take stock options or should he switch for 50% hike? Or if they give 30% hike and stocks for remaining amount? Basically can stock options be right substitute for salary hike?

Do you guys usually give a higher number or just narrow the range down but stay within the salary range posted with the job description?
