Hi There - I'm considering a role in consulting. The role is London based and as some of you may know the commute into London by train is significantly expensive (especially compared to my pre-covid commute by car). So that I can properly consider any offers I may get - can you claim expenses generally when travelling to client site, if that client site is also in London (albeit a different part of London to where your home office).
Is there a market for lawyers to add expertise In crisis management or reputation management? My goal is to counsel clients (businesses or public figures) on how to respond to media inquiries without saying or posting something detrimental to a potential lawsuit while still maintaining communication with their client base. Creatives: anyone ever go client side? What's it like? Not really looking for creative fulfillment, just better hours.

Because they would be taking away talent from the agency they just helped?

Additional Posts in Small Law / Solos
I believe improving one’s sales conversion rate is something everyone want to improve but no one wants to admit they would like to work it. Funny how lawyers will spend thousands on seminars to improve trial skills. But this topic is not discussed in our profession. I have read books in sales. But am unable to find any for lawyers. I want convert every lead I can. Does anyone have tips, books, cle’s or studied this topic?

Finally doing what I should’ve done 18 months ago- starting an s corp for my firm. Recommendations on payroll services? I’m a solo. No staff or other attorneys.
Do you think going solo or joining a small firm is more sustainable long-term for WLB than Big Law?
Does anyone run a business in addition to their firm? I’m a solo and I’m doing pretty well with about 60-70 billable hours a month. Though that leaves a lot of downtime. Curious if anyone has any second businesses that require about 20 hours a week. Not looking for passive income or franchise ideas though.
Best way to go about getting contract work for new solo/startup? Should I just ask around the area for people doing that type of work and see if they have anything?
How do you balance wanting to be the “go to” person who gets it all done, no matter what, and feeling like you are taken advantage of because of that?
Has anyone left, or had an associate leave, a small firm and remain of counsel or in some other capacity to assist with a handful of matters going to trial? How did you structure compensation? Don’t want to leave my boss in the lurch with some big cases going to trial at end of year but also can’t use those as excuses to stay. Would like to offer a reasonable proposal. Even if boss turns it down, I’ll feel better about knowing I offered to help.
Maybe this is the wrong bowl- but I’m going crazy with Microsoft word’s new “save a copy” feature. Is there any way to revert to the classic “save as” function?
Merry Christmas all! I’m looking for advice on how to find and retain an associate. I’ve been a solo for 3 years and have had the same number of associates come and go/be let go. I just need someone reliable who won’t blow a deadline or turn in crap work because it’s not their firm or it’s just a gig. Help?
Hi all, I have been practicing for 5 years (admitted in NY & NJ) and recently went in house. I just started a side business of writing blog posts for firms or solo practitioners. DM for more info!
Anyone have a company or person who created their firm's conflict check procedures? Is that even a thing? I'm just feeling overwhelmed with figuring out how I'm going to keep track of it, especially as I grow. With so many things to keep track of as a solo I feel like this is one I would rather delegate.
Has anyone used a tech consultant or an outside tech provider that helps you set up your firm or serves as an outside IT department? This may just be my wishful thinking, but would love if I could find someone to fill this role for my firm.
I started a solo firm right as I was barred with about 3 years legal experience in the field. First year it’s looking like 500-750k. I out earn my big law friends, while living on a beach working remotely. I just hired my first paralegal and couldn’t be happier.
What are you solos making annually? Net profit? I’m thinking of going solo in a couple of years but trying to do cost-benefit. Also what does your overhead look like? Thank you!
Contact review. Sending cease and desist letters on behalf of tenants. Adult guardianship applications. DNRs and end of life provisions (that you can draft and file with local hospitals).
Thank you so much for asking and thank you so much for answering
If you can, I'd stick within your niche and just market a little wider. If it's a more severe cash flow issue, I'd recommend traffic court. When I was first starting off this helped me a lot and the marketing is pretty easy/direct. Usually one day's work for $500-1000.
Excellent! Thank you!
