Agree $150 is a good start. And competitive.

What is an independent consulting company? Is that like one consultant that is incorporated? Or a small team? Genuinely curious. I'm hoping to transition from full-time to partime and always thought that by 50 maybe contract work just to keep me busy and earn just enough to not have to tap into savings.

I honestly have no idea. Do you not know any independent contractors you can ask? You're going to need a network to help with these sort of questions if you decide to go independent. Just make sure you're factoring in your overhead. You gotta figure out taxes, healthcare costs, time off, etc. So you have to charge way more than you may think. You can use your current firm's pricing for your hourly rate as an upper limit that you won't come close to (you don't have the brand recognition or the resources to justify that obviously)

Thus leaving us with a large chunk of change that we will have to front. Had this been done correctly in the first place, we wouldn't have cared about up

Just giving a bit of Gyan to fellow fishers Please please do not ever use CTC comparison between current and next company. If you get an offer, do an in hand calculation. Some companies add Retirals like Employer PF, Gratuity along with Insurance, furniture allowance as part of your CTC. Others don't. Sone also have higher variable package. So when you do a CTC delta you may get a 20% hike but when you discount the above things you will fall short and may end up making less. So choose wisely.

I need out of M&A. I like the people, I like the work, I even like most of the clients, but my health can’t take the fire drills. Currently on on a day where I literally got back from A&E and I’m probably going to work overnight on a closing (and no, it’s neither the partners’ nor clients’ fault, this is government dictated). We have resource but nobody with enough deal knowledge so it’s two people trying to get everything out while two first years wait on our instructions but can’t do much.
