What should I look for in a good bourbon to make Manhattans with? And what are some interesting bitters you’ve tried? I’ve only ever had whiskey cocktails at restaurants, and want to try my hand at making them 😊

Four Roses Yellow Label. Relatively inexpensive and good for mixing. It’s also good neat.

Bitters I buy whatever I can find, I do like the orange bitters.

Woodford reserve is one of my favorites along with Carpano Antico sweet vermouth, expensive vermouth, but worth it

Old Grand Dad 114...around $25-27

I second the Carpona Antica sweet vermouth recommendation and try some of Woodford’s orange, chocolate or cherry bitters.

Rittenhouse for a rye Manhattan....my favorite way to enjoy the drink

It’s traditional to use rye in a Manhattan. This brings more pepper and baking spice notes to the cocktail. Thus, the drink stands out compared to one with bourbon. And, the good thing about rye is that you still get a lot vanilla, caramel, honey, and cherry notes that come with bourbon - this is because rye and bourbon are aged the same way. Bottom line: rye is better because for manhattans because of the complexity it adds while complimenting the fruit and sweet flavors of the vermouth.

My favorite ryes to use are: Michter’s, Sazerac, or High West Redemption.

Lately I’ve been feeling pay by bracket policy is very counter productive. When I came from my prev company, I had salary at the higher bracket due to market correction and novartis offer coinciding. Now after a couple of years, I see that people who were hired before or after me on a lower package have somewhat similar package as me cause of the pay brackets despite me performing better. Should I talk to my manager explaining my predicament? Or should I simply search for another job?

Going to be in Baltimore for a couple days later this week. Any “hidden” stores that I should check out? Any whisk(e)y experiences? Already booked a tasting at Sagamore.

Tonight’s dram is Jura Superstiton. It’s both sweet and smokey, an unusual combination. Apparently when demand spiked and stocks ran low they decided to simply discontinue it instead of making it up somehow with other casks.

Let the holidays commence!

Sweet nose, but then a hit of savory spice on the tongue with an insanely long finish that is all cigar.

I wouldn’t drink this with a cigar, because you wouldn’t notice it, but it’s insane how much that finish lingers and mimics the mouth tingle after smoking a cigar.
