IMO the same. Associate Director means almost Director and I‘ve seen it being used mostly for SM rank-equivalent, just that the leaders of that group preferred that naming
I’d seen AD used for a Senior IC role. SM used for junior People leader roles.

...what industry are you referring to here? An AD in non profit/government/Healthcare may be wildly different from AD in Ls or FS. Gotta narrow it down a bit.

Thanks D2. I’d like to be engaging more with BD/Sales so that’s great. But— I hardly ever see SMs/ Associate Dirs in my vertical doing much with sales, at least external-facing. Guess you always have to sell proposals to leadership. Can you expand?
May be that I’m in more of a Strat Ops/ Biz Ops area currently rather than pure Strategy. These 2 roles I’m looking at will be more internal as well.
