What skills should I focus on if I want to have a great career in tax? Would learning sql or python help? Or should I focus on tax technical? There is only so much time to learn so much!

Or you can do niether and still have a great career in tax. There is no requirement to be successful. Sometimes having the right personality and being in the right place at the right time is all you need. You could master SQL then move to a position where you would have little need for it. I think tax texhnical would likely be better since most of the tax departments that I interact with have a tax director or tax SM who is a tax guru. They don't care much about data analytics necessarily, they just care about tax planning and how to manage tax expense for corporate accounting. So that would be my route IMO.

Thanks for your input!

Focus on tax technical. This comes from someone deep in the technology side of tax. I think my role is important, but tax technical knowledge will always be supreme.

Welcome, I just would like to talk to other people in the fiber broadband service provider realm. Share tips, events, new products, and ask questions. I’m no expert for a large vendor but I hope we get some in the group. I am an engineer for a small ISP and can share what I can that may be helpful. I have been to conferences and on webinars but would like to see how others accomplish their FTTH services.

My spouse has made it clear to me that they no longer support me working in biglaw and want me to find a job with more reasonable hours. They were supportive early in my career and when we had one child, but our second was born a couple of years ago and all the additional work they put in at home, the lack of family time and lack of couples time is becoming a big strain on our marriage. We are in a high cost of living city so will have to undergo a major lifestyle change if we forego my biglaw..

Hi fellow Aussie consultants. Today’s R U OK day, and whilst I believe one should ask this question on any day, it’s a good reminder for us.

Given recent tragic events at EY and the pressures we face with daily, please make sure to speak to your loved ones if required. Mental health is real. I’m happy to lend an ear too.

Aim of this bowl is for us to help each other as best as we can, more so than anything else. I hope everyone is doing ok, happy Friday Jr!

Stay awesome, people 😊

Thoughts on CAIA? Difficulty, hours studied, study tips, overall experiences, etc.? I’ll be sitting for Level 1 in September. Currently work in the fund of funds space - moving over to my firm’s hedge fund research team soon so CAIA seemed like a perfect way to get knowledge in the area beforehand. I’m almost one year out of undergrad (econ background) so a lot of the CAIA content is new to me

Went from a big firm to work for a smaller firm. The people in the smaller firm are protective of their work and are good by their work too. I no longer feel chaos or stress. I am treated with respect and my schedule is more normal. I am even working more billable hours than before, but it feels like a seamless experience. I don’t work then past 5pm or anything out of the ordinary for this time of the year. I am so grateful!
