Wouldn’t it be more soothing to know what mistakes DIDNT end up with a job loss.
For example, not realizing your assistant wrote down the wrong service address; which resulted in a default judgment against one of the world’s leading fashion houses, that in turn necessitated a partner to run down to Small Claims court to get it tossed out?
Another good one — forgetting to register security (on a first in time register) in relation to a large facility, and after being out of time to register, requiring a late court application. The person still works with us (but it was a pretty big deal).
Secretly working for another company while also working for firm
Bottom line is it generally takes a lot to get straight fired. It would likely take something that could expose the person to criminal liability or get the firm in trouble for harassment or something along those lines. If the issue is quality of work, it’s far more likely that someone would eventually be asked to leave, with a good amount of time to find a new job, then summarily fired on the spot.
I’ve never seen anything case wise. Only people I knew who were straight fired tried to get into confidential financial and review information at the firm, and then lied about it.
I have seen people get fired after being a shitty associate for like a year to 1.5 years straight (not knowing any substance as a senior lead associate, missing emails, pissing partners off), but only after like 3-4 warning talks. Maybe my firm was soft but we always joked about how we could just give up for at least a year and we still wouldn’t get fired bc our firm is so nice about giving second, third, fourth, etc. chances.
That being said fired associates always got a 3 month severance. Some even got an additional 3 months if they couldn’t find a job by the end of that period.
Just curious where OP is coming from. Are they worried about their own performance or do they have a fellow associate who they think should be fired?
Sounds like you are human.
Get some sleep. I guarantee you will never make that mistake again :)
An associate I know got fired for accidentally swapping digits in the wire instructions and repeating the mistake over the telephone. Luckily the money ended up in the account of an affiliate, but the associate was let go.
That seems harsh
