New to consulting, but it seems like utilization targets really only function to incentivize folks to avoid the bench. In terms of billing actuals, isn’t everybody better off if you just bill 40/45/whatever your target is? Better forecasting and budgeting (good for project lead), client paid for hours so we charge for them (good for partner), peace of mind for hitting utilization target (good for consultant who doesn’t have to worry as much about hitting target). Am I missing something here?

Is this worth leaving a firm over? I got a raise to “market rate.” I asked the managing partner about it because another associate was offered 2x as much to stay when he brought them a job offer (he ended up leaving instead). Partner says that those were different circumstances (one month ago) and it was in an effort to be mindful of associate workload by retaining him. They’re not budging on my raise, although they agreed I was at least as valuable to the firm as the other associate.
