A very funny former colleagues used this definition: “I have no idea what the conversation was about. It covered topics that were over my head. In an attempt to quickly gloss over the fact that I have no idea what I am doing, I will use this phrase and hope you just nod you head and move on.”

Not a dumb question. Consulting over complicate things when it’s not necessary. Some of what we work is complicated but our clients appreciate when they understand the direction spoken in their language and that we care enough to do that. You can then be a trusted advisor.

True

Not a real term, but common in consulting in communicating a bottom line type message...

The show/reference didn’t age all that well- but Workaholics had an amazing “Ders gets promoted” episode where he used Net Net...so this is still a joke/heavily used phrase amongst friend group...judge away

Ah interesting, thanks! So is there any reason why “net net” is used instead of “net?” For example, any finance or accounting terminology this ties back to?

So you take the net, right? Then you take the net of that. It’s like you netted out the net to come to the net of that net. Is this netting?

Not gross net

I work at a small firm and I am the only first year associate. A semi-frequent problem I have is I will send a partner my research findings and never hear back. I automatically assume this means my work was not helpful/total crap, and they just don’t want to hurt my feelings. Of course there could be other reasons but....Is it okay to send a follow-up email to ask if what I sent was helpful or if I can be of further help? I don’t want to sound needy or whiney but I also want clarity. Cont’d

I worked in industry for close to 15 years and then moved into consulting. I hear a lot of consultants, who clearly have no industry experience, complaining about how rough it is. The complaining makes them sound so entitled and it makes me lose so much respect for them.

Few recruiters reached out to me and have been offering a hefty salary. Similar situation last year was different. I.e I see salary difference of 30 to 40% in base salary range. I am too excited to take the offer’s, but also scared that is it just momentarily and when market stabilizes they would fire folks???? The companies reaching out last year and this year are different ; none of them are big tech companies.
