What time do you expect your staff to be in the office in the morning? These 2 keep coming in 910 and 930 when we agreed on 9 (which is generous).

OP, have you ever heard of agree to disagree? It's like you just can't let this go because not everyone agrees with you, and you're making all of these assumptions about people being on their first project, being new to managing, or being a few years out of school. Also, the fact that you use words like "defy" to describe what's happening makes you sound like a slave driver, or someone who is on a serious power trip. It's not about the fact that the clients may have said something or the team's work quality, it's about the fact that they "defied" you. Give me a fucking break. You can dismiss dissenting opinion all you want, but it's pretty clear to the rest of us reading this thread that you're the one with the problem. And FYI, I'm 6 yrs out of school, been in consulting the whole time, never had an issue with client optics, my last 3 consecutive clients have described either myself or my team as "superstars" or "rockstars" to their own superiors and partners. So you do you and I'll keep doing me.

I work on teams where some people show up at 7 or at 10 depending on how they prefer to run their lives. Everyone on the team respects and understands each others preferences, as long as the work gets done. We are mature enough to figure that out. Work together to support different working styles. There is only an expectation to be in at a hard time in the morning if there is a client meeting or internal meeting with partners. Even if it's a regular team check in early in the morning, we are totally okay with dialing in from home before coming in shortly after. And I'm not bullshitting you. There are a lot of things I don't like about my firm, but this optics-obsessed utilization culture isn't one of them. Produce insights, not FaceTime.

Is there a standing 9am meeting that they're late for? Are they not responsive on email before they get in? Are they not getting deliverables in on time because they get to the office after 9? Unless the client has raised an issue with their arrival time, I'd say let this go and focus on actual problems.

Y'all dumb, as long as they get their work done who cares

You tell their asses to be in the office tomorrow by 8:30 at the latest.

One time a new associate came in 5 minutes late at 5:35a so he had to work in a dark closet for the rest of the day. Had to slip hot dogs under the door every few hours and empty his pee jar. #optics #4theclient

Lol OP you sound like an unpleasant person to be around. I don't blame your team members for avoiding you

Do you guys actually call your teams "staff"? That seems so patronizing

like

@A2 - Because this isn't a industry job, client perception matters.

Output, not input! Maybe it's different if you actually bill by the hour, but getting in early for its own sake is rarely a productive use of my time. If they're not getting things done fast enough then tell them that rather than micromanaging the schedule.

Hah I've have no problems with my team members coming in at a reasonable time, being responsive when out of the office, delivering quality work, or generally maintaining team norms...but good luck with your staff.

Looking at the number of comments from OP , i know what he/she does after getting into office in time.

What time does the client get there? Ideally we should be there before the client

I have had 0 cases where clients knew my physical arrival time if there were no meetings. If they need me earlier I have a phone and an email. And for all they know you did 3 hours of work in your hotel before arriving.

like

Okay OP, you clearly came into this conversation looking for a specific answer and didn't get it. I think flexibility (when possible) and communication are the key things here. Be flexible on days you can be and communicate clearly to your team on what and why. They'll like you better for it :) And yes, we do lead teams larger than 2ppl at both McK and BCG ;)

They are not super hard workers is the problem. And no they are not responsive before then. I think they could be getting things done more quickly than they are, so I do feel that extra hour or so could be helpful. And yes of course clients pay attention to this shit.

like

@D2 - clients pay us to be there x amount of hours because that's what we told them was necessary in the project plan. If they see us get it done in less time they don't perceive it as efficiency but as us cheating them.

like

It's definitely fair to have a conversation about norms with them. I just personally prefer to come in later and stay later unless I have a specific meeting to attend and it bothers me when people blindly say "there's no reason to come in after 8:30".
