The Onion absolutely never misses
I’m scared of the direction we’re headed as a country. It’s looking more like the rich and powerful don’t have to obey the laws of our land or comply with the once feared congress and senate........

Seriously
I generally agree that we shouldn’t be celebrating these people, but if we want to defund the police we’re going to see a whole ton more people who are untrained at handling firearms. I’m not a fan of the McCloskeys but protestors threatened to murder their dog and one told them they would take the master bedroom after they murdered them.
They don’t know anything about proper handling of firearms nor appropriate defense tactics for a situation like this, but they represent far more gun owners than we’d like to admit. We need to de-escalate the acute violence, enact broad-sweeping structural reforms to policing, drug laws, and other issues that disproportionately affect black and brown Americans, and yes, encourage America’s gun owners to seek appropriate, frequent, and detailed training.
You’re completely right that Kyle Rittenhouse has fallen to a narrative that glorifies the McCloskeys - he’s basically joined his equivalent of ISIS because he’s disillusioned, angry, and has found an identity amongst a group that feels persecuted. He should be doing his homework and talking to his friends. Unfortunately, terrorism in the US looks a lot like Kyle Rittenhouse for the reasons I noted. To be honest, I kind of feel for both the McCloskeys and Rittenhouse (not a zero sum game and does not address how I feel about victims of policing or protesting). They’re just ignorant people who have let rhetoric win them over.
It’s also really hard to believe that ignorance is a curse that has fallen on the followers of one political group when the responses to me writing about supporting enacting broad-sweeping changes to policing is met with ~LeArN whAt dEFuNd MEanS~
