What to do if you’ve given lots of notice about an OOO and offered to get coverage and the partners says basically just says no you don’t get to be OOO? Very interchangeable junior associate and it’s just one deal for this partner…

Spent my first 6 years working for a partner like this. It will not make you a better lawyer. Run away.

Don’t back down. You’re telling them that you’ll be OOO, not asking permission.

If I’m (somehow) truly indispensable to the matter or I like the partner/client, I’ll let folks know they can reach out if anything comes up and I’ll try to make myself available, but certainly not cancelling my plans.

Absent special circumstances (e.g., you knew in advance that everyone needed to be available during that time), I would avoid working with that partner again.

I mean I’m thinking I just don’t work and am OOO and they can deal

You say sorry not sorry and flight is booked. You will try to check your email but you know spotty internet coverage so no guarantees.

Fungible junior + lots of notice + offer to cover = partner has no basis to complain and can fuck off. As a junior, there is no scenario in which you specifically need to be on that deal, and if there is a gap in coverage after all your notice and offers to find it, that’s the partner’s fault as a manager.

Get coverage. Find someone, talk to your staffer etc.

You are going in with an "ask" mentality. Let this be a lesson that ne t tome it's a "tell" mentality.

NOT: Could I find appropriate coverage?

INSTEAD: Susie will be covering as I'm OOO, and I've briefed her and she's up to speed.

I would find another place to work. Never being able to have a vacation should be illegal.

I don't know who needs to hear this, but I have a few former classmates and colleagues sweating over lateral interviews. Take a deep breath and relax.

First, doing these interviews does not define you as a person.

Second, take it one day at a time; if they are moving forward, they see something in you.

Third, remember that the people interviewing you are human beings. Connect with them, be personable.
