Enjoy it. That’s a normal part of the industry (especially this time of year) and as an associate that isn’t responsible for bringing in new business, do your best to make the most of the down time. You will miss it. It’s also a good opportunity to make progress on administrative tasks (e.g., filing emails, catching up on CLEs, etc.). If you have any specific interests in connection with the law, this is a great time to learn about recent developments or cases. Finding a specialty or developing a niche skill is a great way to keep the job interesting, differentiate yourself from your peers and—depending on how long you wanna stick with it—carve out a unique and marketable practice. You can also ask partners if there are any articles or client updates they’ve been meaning to write but haven’t had the time. It’s a good way to elevate your profile, build writing skills and learn about partners’ interests. Or just chill. Being slow is the best. Get into a new show on Netflix or a new podcast. Organize and decorate your office. Leave early and go to the gym or a museum. Write an old friend a note. Call your mom. There’s more to life than billing ;)
Thanks Associate 1!
Totally agree with those suggestions. I get my newsletters to filter to a folder that says “read later” and it feels pretty good to sort through them during downtime.
