What toughest challenge you faced on a project with a manager who is hands off and a micromanaging director?

I would see that as a great learning opportunity for you. Your work will get direct feedback from a Director- which should help you learn. You also will need to manage up to the Director without upsetting the Manager- so copy the manager and director on everything... Run your work by the manager first (even if they ignore you and don't review it) and never never say anything about the manager slacking to the Director

OP you are going to face this situation over and over again. If you play this wrong, you will get a negative review from your manager and the director will probably think you are whining. If the manager isn't making the updates- offer to do it yourself. Just some advice from someone 5+ years in....

like

NP OP- one more thing- if the director is micromanaging it is probably because they realize the manager is sucking. Usually they won't do it if they don't have to... Food for thought...

Once, my manager was hands-off and the director was a micromanager.

Quit mentioning it.

That's pretty spot on advice there. ^

I saw another post and s/he got completely flamed but I'm in that situation as well. Tough position to be in for sure.

Yup. My manager reviews the work but slacks on making the correct updates in the file which results to more work for me and I mentioned it repeatedly too.

But I get I'm suppose to help him but efficiency at the least? And working as a team? Not team work if you'll ignore the complexity of the work I put in

Cool. Great feedback @pwc1

I just got into this new tech industry side use to be in another tech side. He just made manager. But honestly I'm not learning a lot of procedural work and this is suppose to be an easy project. I'm learning more from the last senior who was on it. Strange way to staff but none of the guys from the first release was placed for this release....

Started at a new firm 3 months ago, first two months was swamped staffed on a huge deal, (my only file) did my hours everything good. Hey all! I was told I might get help here! I got an offer at a mid pharma for a strategy role that I’m intending to take. Partner is threatening to sue because the job offer is from a direct client that I work with. I’ve received legal counsel and have no apparent liabilities in any of my or my clients contracts (non-compete, non-solicitation, etc.). Unfortunately, that doesn’t prevent me from getting sued because I still have to defend it. Has anyone else ever been in a similar situation?

Interested to hear how people learn project management. I have done PRINCE2 exam and read PMP materials, but I find these are too textbook theory based. Real life projects seem to be very different and a lot more complicated. I often do not know what needs to be done unless someone tells me. I believe you can learn these things on the job, but I am keen to expedite this with some books or courses. Are there any resources that are particularly helpful?

Client has bill of sale stating she bought something (a horse), but she never got it’s official registration papers transferred and they are now lost by previous owner with whom we cannot get in touch. The registration organization for the horse breed says a court order is needed to prove ownership in the case official papers are lost. Since we have the signed bill of dale, would a declaratory judgment suffice to declare client the rightful owner? Does anyone have any templates for this/advice?

A client based in Japan had sent us a list of some Japanese texts and their English translations at our request which we needed. SM: Copy all the Japanese texts and their translations from document that client sent into a new document and send it back to client (to whom it came from) and ask them if they are correct. Me: Why are we doing that? SM: Just to ensure that we have validation in an email that client sent these translations to us. Me: Facepalm 🤦🏻‍♂️

From talking to students at multiple M7 schools, it seems like all of the BB/MBB/FAANG companies recruit at most if not all of the schools . So if you're planning on recruiting for one of these, is there really a major difference in career opportunities between each school? Asking because it seems like some schools are specifically known for finance vs consulting vs tech, but if the companies are all recruiting at all these schools, the differences don't seem as pronounced to me.
