If it’s nerve pain from a non-injury, then I would assume you’d need to visit a doctor who can rule out neuralgia/fibromyalgia/etc. I believe this doctor would be a neurologist
Thanks D1, I don’t know what type of pain it is actually. I said “nerve pain” to differentiate it from muscle soreness. It is sharp pain in my neck when I move my neck in certain angles.
I corrected my post
Physical therapist will help provide exercises for you to do at home, as well as manipulation to help it along in session.
Get an MRI and see an Orthopedic as a starting point.
Do you have pain radiating down your arms? If you do you should see an orthopaedic because you might have a slipped disc. If it’s just localized neck pain it’s more likely to be muscular.
Hmm might be worth looking into but most commonly it would be pain, weakness. I.e grip strength is weaker than usual. Sorry very basic medica knowledge here - I’m only in my 3rd year of med school 😂
For long-term pain management: +1 Physical therapy, +1 strength training (I hate yoga & reformer Pilates changed my chronic neck pain... seriously)
Another longer term habit: being intentional about office posture - get a laptop stand + external keyboard/mouse. Nothing is worse than shrimp laptop posture for 12+ hours a day
Thanks so much for the detailed tips BCG1!
I get this in bursts of a few days. It’s probably rolled forward shoulders from being a keyboard warrior. You need a physical therapist and/or yoga.
Whatever doctor you choose to go with I’d recommend requesting an MRI of your cervical spine to rule out any disc issues, especially if it feels like nerve pain. I had chronic sciatic pain for a while and it turned out I had a bulging disc in my lumbar, was able to recover with the right regimen of physical therapy.
Am I destined to having to go to a doctor every two weeks / every month for the rest of my life because of this?
Neuro
PCP is the first stop, if they can’t figure it out... off to the neuro.
Thank you. Sounds like on top of exercise (eg yoga) i should go to either orthopedic or physical therapist.
Based on your experience, you still have to visit the doctor / physical therapist every 2 weeks/month or has anyone managed to get off of frequent check-ups?
OP - Some chiros are quacks. Real evidence is lacking that they work. But some swear by it. PTs will do similar things but work to teach you how to maintain.
Thank you so much all. I have an appointment with an orthopedist scheduled.
Venting a little more - it’s so frustrating because now it’s painful to even sit down or stand up. Working on the laptop becomes so unenjoyable. 😢Not to mention other things I love to do like hiking - I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to carry 30-40 pounds backpack over long periods anymore.
I hope I find a solution - scared to live like this for the rest of my life.
