401k is just a type of retirement account - not an investment.

I would do only 3 ETFs: S&P 500, Developed Europe and Emerging Markets. All from Vanguard

Honestly index funds. I've wasted a lot of time and energy investing in individual stocks only to end up in roughly the same spot I'd have been if I put it all on VOO.

I also wish I would have found a way to contribute to Roth IRA earlier. I didn't even know it was an option until I started my career and even then I didn't start contributing for a few years instead only contributing to 401k to get the match.

This has been golden for me. Even switching companies and having to reinvest in different funds hardly put a dent in the double digit returns. It’s to the point now that I probably will not need to spend it for retirement unless granny doesn’t kick the budget at the estimated age of 90 and buy Aston Martins in every color.

Started looking into alternative asset investment. I like the high yield notes you can fund (like a 9mo 14% APY note) but these companies are young-ish so we’ll see if they’re as good as advertised. Also, you need to be an accredited investor to do it

Hello all!

I’m a MSN, RN with 7 years of critical care nursing experience (ICU/PACU). Prior to becoming a nurse, I was a Medical Service Corps officer in the US Army for 8 years. I have my BSN/MSN and a non-nursing MA.
I’m interested in shifting gears to healthcare consulting. I’ve heard great things about Chartis and would love to hear more, specifically with regards to nurses making the jump. Can anyone offer insight or any other consulting firm they recommend?
Thank you in advance!

Is there a sensible reason to leave my Fidelity account as is as a backup access in case the Vanguard system goes down for “whatever reason”?

Always been a fan of FIRE and reading about it has definitely helped my finances but I can’t help but wonder if the movement is more about lifestyle change than early retirement.

After you achieve FI,you basically have to maintain the lifestyle that got you there.

What if you want to go on a lavish vacation or buy that flatscreen TV? Are you supposed to do away with material goods entirely? I suppose you could keep working for discretionary $ and live off interest but then you’re not retired.

Do people tend to age out of wanting to FIRE?

In your 20s-30s, you don’t know much, you’re told what to do, you have few financial resources so you are tied to your job. Under these circumstances it makes perfect sense why you would want to FIRE asap.

But eventually you advance up the ladder, you are now the boss and your people do all the grunt work. You also have built up expertise which makes the job easier. And you are making the best money of your life. FIRE is no longer so pressing.

FIRE folk, do you contribute to a traditional IRA, with the expectation that your income will be lower when you finally hit FIRE and hope for that ~10 tax, so you'll do ladder conversions later or do you do direct Roth or backdoor Roth conversion contributions now? I don't mind the Roth contributions now, but I truly believe we'll have less income when retired. No kids now, but planning to in a couple of years.

new to investing. have done some research - reading blogs and a few books on investing. I still have the question of do individuals that take the index fund route… do you all purchase the same funds for different accounts? Example, would you invest in VTSAX across a brokerage and roth account, or would you take a different approach for each account?
