What value do people see in specific training for managers and leaders around mental health conversations and or in dealing with work life balance?

That presumes the managers and leaders are mentally healthy enough to get anything meaningful out of the training.

Agencies are slowly (we need them to move faster) realizing that protecting people because they may have great client relationships or because they bring in the new business is no longer a reason to tolerate bad behavior. Leaders and CEO’s hopefully understand that it costs more to replace teams than it does a leader and leaders and managers should be rewarded and recognized for retention and low turnover as well as manager satisfaction scores in feedback and reviews

TBH at all the agencies I’ve worked at I feel like all the training in the world won’t help. It feels like a bigger cultural shift is needed that’s more about shifting people and policies.

I do not disagree, I think it’s a holistic approach that is needed. We need to address policy, training and language

While I’m also skeptical about whether it would change anything, managers and leaders in the industry really, really need to have at least basic training on mental health. Most of them don’t understand conditions like depression and treat them like a character flaw or personal failing, not a real medical issue that needs to be taken seriously. The bias and stigma around these issues really need to be addressed, because it makes it hard for employees to get the support they need and only amplifies the shame, fear and alienation they already feel. Obviously, a lot needs to change in our industry when it comes to mental health, but a little compassion and understanding would go a long way.

Totally agree! Training is a start.. we need to address policy and language and break the stigmatization of what mental health is, no two people are the same and symptoms and coping mechanisms are different and we need to be able to understand, discuss and show empathy in every case

Great question. Awesome thread. Couple things come to mind: changing the dialogue for folks to understand mental health concern isnt only when someone has a breakdown or actual medical proof. The value comes in recognizing behaviors and systems that cause diagnosis FAR BEFORE they happen. The value comes in behavior change and sensitivity to this fact in daily interactions. Also, a healthy workplace / culture/ environment isnt to be sole responsibility of HR. It LIVES in the work and teams.

My in-laws are the worst. The list of micro aggressions are too much to list, but the most recent transgression occurred yesterday. I recently had a baby and I now use shape wear to feel more confident and it looks good. I think a certain auntie noticed and made a beeline to tell the family. I overheard someone say I knew she couldn’t look that good that soon 🙄. I wish I could distance myself but I have two kids so it makes it more challenging. My husband is also close to them.
