What was /is your happiness wage? I’m going to hit my highest TC ($300k) this year but I hate my WLB more and more. Thinking back to when I was making between $100k - $120k my WLB felt the best…

Making close to 400 (vested) and I’m happy af and bored at the slow pace at work. 🌞

What’s your base salary @Google1?

No here has said anything less than 100k (at the time I’m reading comments & writing this)…..am I really so far from what people consider happiness? Rhetorical question, I think.. 🤨 if I could make double what I make now it would still be less than 100k. But I could afford to go back to school and complete my master’s. I think that would make me pretty happy

Happiness vs not having fear/stress/worry that could be solved by more money are two diff things. Discontent over working too hard, feeling like ur apartment is too small, wanting to spend more time with your kids, not getting to travel as much as you want, feeling like youre missing out on experiences -vs- worrying your fam will be homeless if you get hurt at work or get sick or die, not going to the doctor/dentist/etc because you dont have the money, choosing which debt to pay when you dont have enough to cover everything due, being afraid to take a day off work because you dont have pto and u need the money. There’s definitely a line where, while money cant buy happiness, money can definitely make you feel more comfortable and relieve some stress. I would say its right around 100k where u can comfortably make leisure plans/pay off debts/save for the future without having to sacrifice anywhere too much.

I got pretty lucky. My tc is near 200k and I work 35 hrs a week. Wfh 💯. You don’t need to hit 500k to feel rich but definitely above 100k for sure. There are jobs that give you wlb without killing u in hours.

What positions,?

Im also achieving this year my all time high TC and I’m tempted to say that my WLB is more correlated with my manager than my role and responsibilities.

As an example, I manage two go to market initiatives. In one of them, I’m a high performer, prized lead, in the other one I’ve been called a micromanager, always behind, not proactive enough lead - it’s dreadful.

Guess which one has an amazing and generous MD behind and which one has a terrible, selfish one, that takes all the credit for good stuff and blames other people for the not good?

Not too difficult to guess which one impacts negatively my mental health /WLB

Y’all gotta stop comparing your salaries without more information. Like SM mention some of these people are targets from their school. They also live in major cities where standard of living is super high. I busted butt to get to 175k and live off of 45k because I don’t live in those cities. I also don’t think making 300k is worth 50-60+ hours of my life. (I work like 30 and get paid for 40) So some of these wages that get thrown around aren’t the norm everywhere and it’s only a few companies too. But also to SM point networking helps

Idk, I was pretty damn happy making $10/hr as a lifeguard summer after graduating high school. Probably won’t be that happy again lol

That’s the problem though, as our TC increases, not only do our hours, but also our responsibilities.

As you move up the ladder and manage an increasing number of people and projects, the demand for your time increases. WLB gets worse and worse every year. My. CEO works nearly every weekend / takes a weekend pack home for review.

likesmart

@SAP1 you sound like the person who sits in a cubicle all day, gets bossed around by a project manager who hasn’t wrote a line of code in his/her life and makes more money than you, and lives in shear misery wondering what happened to your scholastic college glory days. Wake up.

Sweet spot in consulting is early manager at 200k. Good salary. Do 1-2 projects max. Have a team. Enjoy life and not any sales expectations. Less BS and politics.

likesmart

Client drop notes around deliverable quality. Client got shit from his boss and blames you. Hating you or Manager on ground for whatever reason. Payment delays. High margin overruns. Cancel future work.

I’m at around 135 base, 150 total comp and work maybe 10-15 hours a week

Overall I’m not that satisfied as crazy as it sounds - the WLB is terrible and I feel like it promotes laziness/stupid politicking/incompetence

I’m aiming to leave over the next 12 months and crack the 250k threshold. Would be more than happy to work more too since it’ll help for future career growth

like

Aren’t you running scrum for the development? Gosh those velocity charts must look horrible! If I was SM or PO squeezing every hour up to 40 hours. Maybe come to a smaller firm that has a variety of clients and projects.. still make just as much if not more.

Zero dollars - life was great when I got to live off of my parents and didn’t have any responsibility. Could ride my bike to the mall and hang out with buds. Couldn’t get any better. Money creates responsibilities.

Pure happiness? When I was a line cook at a restaurant making about $9.50/hr back in college when the only thing I had to worry about was paying for dorm living and tuition

Genuine satisfaction? Well… I couldn’t go back to that now, but that was a happy simple time back then

I’ve decided $250k is enough for me to be content, be comfortable, and provide a really great life for my family… although more never hurts. I made almost that last year and hope to hit it this year. I have to work really hard to hit it, but hoping I can throttle down in future years and stay around that total comp.

likefunny

If I recall correctly, after $80k there’s a rapid diminishing curve to money and happiness. Other things (family, a fulfilling career, doing things that bring you joy), rapidly supersede in terms of incremental joy.

For the money part, my understanding is 40-80K is a huge lifestyle difference, but 80-120k doesn’t change that much for most people. So you have to increase non-linearly (and even that I imagine becomes hollow fast)

like

The numbers have changed. Something published in my city said the 80k number is now more like 120.

The number I think you’re referencing was around 75k and it’s from over a decade ago at this point.

Are you coining the term “happiness wage” or is this a phrase I just haven’t heard yet?

likesmart

The cliff notes are basically HHI ranks countries on criteria that contributes to quality of life and efficiency wage is a theory that there is an equilibrium of wage that is the minimum you can pay where workers are incentivized to do their work (not slack) but also enough for them not to quit

like

At 250k and it’s been awesome. Sample size of 2 jobs, but way better WLB and comp than consulting.

like

I imagine happiness will only go up. $125k was when I stopped having to worry, felt empowered, and could unlock joyful experienced without months of preplanning

Lbr, wage =/= happiness. But wage and seniority enable a lot of agency that directly afford certain happinesses

Utility curve def flattens at some point, just wondering what it is for most of if they’ve realized they hit that point or still just chasing shiny objects…

You gotta find the pocket for WLB. IMO the Hardest part is figuring out what’s important and what you want to spend your money on. most people think buying a big house and a fancy car are going to make you happy. They don’t. Live below your means and spend money on experiences. My 2c

100k was the sweet spot. Had all I needed. Then started thinking about needs of future family & caught a disease of “more.” It’s a trap.

I am currently a civil engineer thinking of switching to software engineering. I got my masters in water resource engineering where I was coding a decent amount for assignments and it has really stuck with me. Unfortunately, in my current role and field (civil), I don’t really get to do much coding. Does anyone have a similar experience of jumping ship to do software engineering? What would be the best way to go about it (coding bootcamp, another degree, something else)?
