What is like to go to the dark side, you ask. Are you ready for this power, padawan.

like

Funny. It’s less power and less sleep at the same time!

ONCE YOU START DOWN THE DARK PATH, FOREVER WILL IT DOMINATE YOUR DESTINY.

I was a plaintiff’s lawyer for 8 years and am now a partner in a defense firm. I love the defense side. Most of my clients are the same companies and adjusters I “fought” with on the plaintiff’s side so I had established relationships with them already. Billing was an adjustment, but it didn’t take long to get the hang of it if you’re someone who tends to be organized and efficient. There are some downsides to it, but overall I find the work more stable, challenging, and professionally rewarding. And, there’s no one calling me every day wondering “Why is this taking so long?” And “When am I gonna get my money?” And “33%?! What did you even do to earn this money?”

like

I'm 2 weeks into switching and I already like it much better. I much prefer writing reports and billing for it then having to spend hours on the phone with a problem client

like

I did it. I miss plaintiffs work. Build relationships with your corporate client to remind yourself they are still people in order to mitigate burnout

like

I did it. My experience has been slightly less money, but also slightly less stress. It was the right decision for me.

like

It’s all the same people, honestly. You get the same shenanigans on the defense side and with insured clients but with an added dose of either asshole adjusters or ones who are just radio silent/chronically non responsive.

The money is equivalent in my experience, but there are higher hills and lower valleys in plaintiffs work.

Oh, and you get no say in who your client is....

This is interesting stuff - usually I see everyone flipping from defense to plaintiff for significantly more money and never looking back

I really don’t know about juniors. I suppose it depends on the market. Even with a deep Plaintiffs bar making a killing, the base salaries tend to be lower than defense. Usually it’s Mid level lawyers who have some experience doing the switching- sometimes trading up some up front money on the base for big bonus potential. They all tell me they work harder but make significantly more money as a plaintiffs attorney. I have some friends who handle a lot of high volumes work - not usually the big case - and they claim to be pulling in 3-500 a year. I do high exposure, complex defense work and work in high impact litigation reported in national news, etc. and I don’t sniff what they’re making.

Those of you who left for industry, what do you work towards in your role? I was reflecting on my time in public and there was always something, whether it was a new section in the file, getting more client contact, getting invited to a big golf outing, running the jobs, managing the jobs, etc. I worry that leaving would leave me bored and not motivated to hit any sort of goal. I’m burnt out and worry that I’m making a rash decision lol. Thoughts?
