I guess ask the kids what kind of conduct they think is appropriate if we want a healthy country?
I have people I grew up with who are at the point of justifying destruction. In my mind, burning and vandalism goes in the same category as arguing and interrupting and name calling.
It is never appropriate to engage in any of those things if we are hoping for positive change and conversation between groups who disagree.

Yes, that's true. And, in speaking categorically, I am simply trying to point out that name calling is something unhelpful, in the same way that burning things down is.
I'm aware this is an oversimplification. I am only trying to say that in the America I'd like to live in, we would neither be arsonists or assail people with our words.
To a great extent in my personal experience this is the America I live in. But I know we can do better.
Say nothing unless your content is social studies
it's non political to nonpartisan to want your students to use respectful, civil discourse. you don't have to go into policies or preferences. Our leaders should not be exempt from respectful behavior.
Thisssss 👍
Then be the professional you are and don’t!
Students can make their own judgements just like adults can. If I had a student who was concerned I would tell them to go research both parties on their beliefs. From there they will know where they stand. I would tell them that I can not make the decision for them. I would never tell my students what party I’m with, I want them to be independent thinkers.
Your opinions and non-objective ‘teachable moments’ don’t belong in a classroom- Even inside Social Studies- whichever side you are on!!!
Guess I’m kinda surprised at the lack of professionalism in your thinking. That is NOT our job! Separation people.
Everything has been going so well inside this app - then someone has to bring politics into it. The goal to for brainstorming, support, encouragement - so we don’t feel alone in this overwhelming challenging time of teaching. Let’s be big girls and boys and remember to be the professional teachers and leaders we are supposed to be! ❤️
Yes... it is our job to be objective, and teach your math lesson, reading lesson, and even social studies lesson without making students feel that you are influencing their beliefs!!! Show empathy for their home environment, for the wildfires and hurricanes, and people in the world without food. Help them feel that they can be a difference maker in our challenging and DIVERSE BELIEVING world - but you DON’T teach them your way of thinking is right and theirs is wrong!! Or Democratic views are right and Republican is wrong!! THAT is indoctrination! It is NOT our job to teach our opinions or analysis of a current Presidential debate! Teach students (who I’m 99% sure didn’t watch this debate) that their are people who passionately believe their ideals. Their will always be people who believe and think differently than you do. It’s ok. You don’t go in and pretend to ‘comfort distressed’ kids.
By doing that YOU become the UNsafe place and person for your kids!!
We don’t teach our beliefs even hidden in ‘social studies’ under the guise of ‘supporting’ our kids!!
I’m surprised you haven’t felt pushback in our profession from this! I urge you to focus on your subject and teach positive messages of hope that kids need! Not with your views embedded in your comments and acceptance of one side of life.
I don’t think my first graders saw it, so I won’t bring it up. I don’t envy social studies/history teachers right now. And upper grades.
