What is the bonus structure at your firm? I work at an IP boutique in patent and trademark prosecution. Our billable is 1850, which sounds nice except that patent prosecution is done on fixed fee so you can only bill so many hours per project. Bonus structure is gross salary divided by 1850 times hours over. So ex, $95 hourly x hours over 1850 and then taxed.

Is it a wise career decision to go from a national firm to a local but strong firm? Practiced with the national firm for a year and a half. The firms are the same type of law, but the smaller firm has less billable requirements and is offering higher salary/better bonus structure as well as more independence such as ability to completely run own case load.

I could finish my brief now and sleep peacefully tonight, or wake up at 5AM to finish it in a hurry. Guess which one I’ll choose…
