Chiat NY. They stuck me (and a few others) in the agency cafeteria and would occasionally make sympathetic eye contact as they passed through to get their cornflakes. I wouldn’t piss on that building if it were on fire.

Janky. A very small (like 4 people) communications firm in an apt in nyc with no pay. BUT it was still amazing experience bc I was doing so much.

Instead of interning in the creative department, they put me in traffic, and I am eternally grateful for that. It gave me the opportunity to learn the intricacies of an agency while also taking on creative projects.

Coffee runs. Coffee stained clothes. Over caffeinated bosses.

It was actually pretty good. It was a paid internship at a smaller independent agency and I was given actual work tasks (not coffee runs etc). Eventually got offered a full time entry level position and ended up staying there for the first 4 years of my career before moving on to a bigger agency.

Small ad-agency in Chi that went bankrupt a long time ago. Amazing first gig...$200 a week (haha). Did ALL the grunt work willingly and happily...soaked in the advice and experience of the team. Found a mentor to show me the ropes. Worked all the time and took every “stretch” opportunity. Got hired full-time, went down w/ ship, landed on my feet...and 16 years later still in this crazy industry. Still learn something new every week.

The copywriters and one of the founders all left right before I started so I, an intern, was suddenly the most senior writer they had.

Unpaid summer internship in the heart of the city. Lots of experience and the team championed the interns. However, there was no opportunity at the end of the internship.

i interned at a pharma company in the IT department doing IT comms. there was very little for me to do so i always asked if i could organize things, sit in on meetings and just take it all in

My first internship was at a tv station. Had to pay a toll to get there. Pay for parking. Pay for the college credits. No stipend or pay but I edited some pieces so that was....nice. This was in the early 2000s and the entire internship/college/no pay relationship really put talented people at a disadvantage if they couldn’t afford the additional expenses and/or needed to bring in an income.

Very first internship was at a risk auditing firm, but I was studying business then. Boring af. First creative internship was actually pretty good, people took me seriously and one of the clients ran with a visual direction I came up with. The team kept me up to date even after I left and shared all the assets with me.

Had a fun paid internship at a small agency that no longer exists in NYC. Did a lot of PA work on photo shoots, pick up/drop off of products, etc. Storyboarded (hand-drawn) a handful of OLVs. Learned light retouching. It was actually very fun and sometimes wish I could go back to simpler times like that.

looking back on it, honestly kinda bad in terms of the type of advertising i was doing, the clients i had, and the location. but at the time it was a great transition and opportunity for me because this certain agency had taken a huge risk on hiring a biology major as an art director 🙏

A dream. I was paid, otherwise I couldn’t have afforded to go down the advertising career path.

Paid internship at an in-house shop within a publishing house in NYC. The publishing house had a big summer intern program so there were about 30 of us from various disciplines. I worked as a designer at the time but it was the best experience. Got to do real world work, bonded with the other interns, enjoyed many onsite office celebrations and summer Fridays. Also learned a lot. It was a great summer.

Traffic dept, checked the “make goods” for the media dept. Only thing I remembered was a creative telling me to leave my small market if I really wanted to be in advertising...never looked back!

A lot of 1 on 1s with my supervisor. Sometimes he'd bring in other people and we'd have "brain storm"

I interned at a small agency in OC that was essentially going out of business so they cut it short. Only lasted a month or so due to lack of work. Some nice people but it was part Copywriting, part errand boy. But I had no really book going in so my options were limited. Might’ve been some ok experience but I came to grips with what I wouldn’t tolerate again.

My female copywriter and I got our first internship when we were 20 at Ogilvy and were promptly nicknamed ‘pinky and bitsy’ by the male creative director.

Perpetually an intern... working at the same company for 1.5+ years and easily doing the work of a junior creative, & taking the heat off my CDs daily; sometimes I’m the only AD on big jobs. I’m not making a livable wage & I’ve undercut my soul, free time, and financial stability with no end in sight. My teammates always really appreciate my hustle and insights. It makes me wonder what else I could possibly do. Put on more make up? Start poppin adderal? I’m joking... but what would you do?
