You no longer or a second class citizen. You get to work with bigger companies on a wider variety of topics. You get to be part of a larger organization and benefit from all of the career growth inherent in that
If you prefer the intellectual / higher level / advisory work vs actually getting things done in companies and being accountable for results (which can be a chore and boring for some people) MBB is a very fine career. PE Ops is a pretty different job actually not not for everyone.
First, it depends a lot by team. PE Ops means very different things across different teams, so theres no one abswe. In my experience, MBB is often 80-90% thinking and 10-20% actually doing something that will actually change the trajectory of a company. PE Ops is the opposite. 10-20% to quickly prioritize the few things that will actually move the needle for a company's valuation and 80-90% making sure these things actually happening. Much more working directly with the people who actually get things done in companies (middle managers), much more practical and detailed problem solving of day to day actions needed by people, and a lot more assessing talent and hiring / firing / moving people into the right seats. Much more patience needed and personal accountability of your head being in the chopping block if things dont work out. Much more intellectual honesty as a result (e.g., you don't want to be neither too optimistic nor conservative when analyzing an opportunity) Some people detest the execution part and would rather stay in the strategic area of roughly what needs to be done.
More opportunity. More money.
Personally experience (although you can say I’m not MBB but LEK comp is MBB level). I work 30% less hours and make 50% more since moving to PE ops
