My dog bit my daughter, what would you do?
Some states have their own benefits, definitely check to see if you live in one of those lovely places. My STD had a 6mo “pre existing condition clause” meaning you couldn’t use it for the first 6mo of enrollment. Pregnancy was a pre existing condition. Remember, fmla is still unpaid, it’s just job protection. Your company may have a policy that starts day 1 that includes a paycheck but something like 60% of maternity leave is unpaid still in the states

You can negotiate with your employer but they aren’t legally required to give you any leave and if you take unpaid leave they do not have to protect your job and can fire/replace you.

I would suggest signing up for the AFLAC hospital indemnity if your new company offers it. This way if you have to take leave without pay, you will get something to help with expenses from AFLAC.
If you're required to do a physical / testing for STD you may not get it if you're pregnant (went through this exact situation). Thankfully, they let me take vacation time and unpaid leave, and I still had a job when I returned.

You’d get the STD, 6 weeks partial pay. And whatever PTO you’d accrue by then.
Some places require you to actually work (even for just a day) in order to accrue PTO. Something worth knowing going into it.
CA has some really good state based leave coverage so you might be fine regardless in that state. Otherwise it depends on your new employer. I was hired 7mo pregnant and told my boss I was pregnant and had to go on leave very soon (it was a really awk situation). My boss was surprised but reacted SO well and even helped me get the company paid leave with HR even though I wasn’t technically eligible for maternity leave. Any additional time would be PTO if they let you go negative (depends on the company policy on this). Honestly, time off can be worked out if you communicate with your new manager what you need. Good mangers will try their best to help you.
