What would it take for you to move away from excel for building business cases, financial modeling, or cost benefit analysis? What if there was an alternative product to make it faster and easier? If it had the same flexibility would you adopt?

Seeing that pretty much everyone else is using Excel, it would also need to be very easily integrated with it.

Alteryx is the first software to gain acceptance as an alternative for working with large data sets. It cannot replace Excel but limitations will drive further innovations of competitors.

like

I love alteryx. It’s great for analyzing data. But not good for scenario planning. It’s quite clunky to say “what if I change constant x from 5 to 10”. That’s what excel is so good for

Pretty much my only consideration is what my bosses and clients can understand and want me to use

likefunny

Excel has obvious shortcomings for data analysis and especially larger data sets. However for financial modelling and scenario planning it’s an amazing tool. Also the entire generation of business people were brought up thinking in that way. So even if we could start again from scratch and design a new tool, I’m not sure it would work with the way people currently think

like

There are other factors - learning curve, compatibility (can others open the same app on their company supported platform), cost, number of user base and availability of help/support

helpful

Excel is very quick to learn/use Given more time, I'd use Python

I would use Python for most things if our teams and clients could understand it!

If my employer paid for it and offered training on it, I'd use it.

Any recommendations for a graduation trip for my BIL the first week of June? He is 22 and has very, very limited domestic travel experience and no experience traveling internationally. His brother and I are significantly older and would like to take him and their mother on a 7-10 day trip as a graduation gift. We want to be sensitive to their lack of experience, so I think anything too culturally overwhelming or adventurous is off the table, but we wanted to find something exciting (cont)
