What would make you choose a 3 person firm with less pay/benefits over a BigCo? I’m hiring in the new year and I’d love some thoughts from you all. Thanks!

Agree with the others - you’re selling upside and true partnership at the ground floor. The folks buying are likely to be more entrepreneurial and wanting to have more control over their destiny. Even if you’re hiring more junior folks - the best folks will want upside to the risk they’re taking. Good luck - let us know how it goes!

I would like to be able to own client relationships and trust in driving projects. That plus doing the type of work I want to do would be very important. The opportunity for growth and higher pay/benefits in the future (depending on how well the firm does, of course) would also be very important

like

I personally wouldn’t, since I’m more risk averse. But if I weren’t, I would expect significant long-term upward potential: more interaction with clients, more exposure to interesting topics, more time spent directly with the firm leader, etc... Basically, trading off short term earnings to work on more “interesting” things

Did just that 6 years ago. Left Deloitte as a senior consultant for consulting startup. We recently sold out business... to EY. Definitely expected substantial stake in the company based on how we did. Agree on yearly well-defined targets and incentivise through bonuses accordingly. This is an entrepreneurial setting, so people accept to take a step back, but need to know they can make big moves by hitting their targets. You need to be extremely strict on what the business needs to grow and incentivise accordingly. Culture was (and still is) super important. If you expect people to choose your company over the structure and security of a big company, you better make sure it’s fun. Define your values and communicate about them on your site, they are extreme important for a small company. Hire for hunger, attitude and potential at first (experience can come later). The book “Who” by Geoff Smart (hiring A-players was super insightful for us). Also, fire quickly. You can’t imagine the difference in impact between a bad/mediocre hire and a great one.

You’re welcome. I was in another situation than you obviously are, but for me it’s by far the best professional decision I’ve made. Felt great to build something from the ground up with likeminded people. Best of luck OP

Less pay and benefits than market? What experience level? No offense meant, but, you need a miracle.

Are you offering ownership? Thinking out loud, possible profiles: - Someone that needs experience. If technical, could be someone with old chops that needs to learn new tech - Someone currently severely under compensated - Unemployed (stop gap) - Tied to the location - Lack of education (potentially limits opps elsewhere) - Alignment with your product/service and their core values - Major career path change or level upgrade

I wouldn’t unless it offered more freedom, better hours, and an equity stake

Aren't those all "pay/benefits"?

Big risk, which means I’d need a big reward. Equity stake and salary/bonus to make up for what I’d lose in my current, fully vested retirement contributions from PwC (6% flat added to a retirement account regardless of my contribution)

Money, a lot of money. Then client profile and types of projects. If your 3 people are 3 white straight men you’re probs a pass, too
