What would you choose? A. A firm with good work-life balance but associate compensation is about 20-30% less than market rate B. Biglaw

A, but that doesn’t really exist.

I made a move like this. Hours are not drastically different except for the fact that in big law you could get to 2800 + hours whereby it’s virtually impossible at my firm, + (and this is huge) there is very little to no work required on the weekends. So I’m billing 2200 and making 20% less but it’s a much less taxing 2200. Would do it again in a heartbeat. Also make it up on the bonus if the firm does well.

like

Depending on your definition of “good work-life balance”, A.

like

Don’t choose A! I’m in it right now. I still work 2300+ hours a year for under market comp. The seniors above me are pacing 2500-2700. Even the partner I work with is at that pace. I don’t understand why anyone works here….Yes, I am currently interviewing for market paying big law

like

I think that means you aren’t actually in A lol

like

More context. My current WLB situation is to leave at 6 as long as work is done + offline weekend. Some people are complaining about the comp, but the partners are like "if you want to get paid more, you gotta sacrifice the WLB". It makes sense. Just wanted start a convo about it.

like

That’s exactly correct. If pay goes to market so will hours requirements. If you’re at a place where you like wlb / pay don’t upset the apple cart. At my last firm i spent my committee time convincing fellow associates not to ask for market pay for exactly this reason. If a place can’t afford to keep up with market voluntarily, what will eventually happen is that hours will be market but associate comp will not keep matching biglaw raises.

like

There is no such thing as giving up just a little comp for work life balance. You want to work 1700 hours? You'll get half what you make now, if that.

like

Yeah. Thinking back now. 20-30% less seems like an understatement...

By market rate do you mean biglaw market rate?

like

biglaw in a lower col city at the bottom of the vault list (that pays market) and in a niche area

like

I had A, i was billing 1800-1850 every year for 70% of biglaw and had my weekends except when something was closing, but that kind of deal is likely to be less good now bc most places below market now won’t keep up with pandemic biglaw raises. That kind of place definitely exists - the reason people here claim that they’re a myth is that some employers are lying. I would be very skeptical of any NYC firm job that advertises itself this way. For me the issue was the quality of work - i had some biglaw-quality work but also mediocre midlaw clients with small budgets and no interesting challenges to deal with.

like

The thing about A is that it doesn’t really exist once you get to your mid and senior years. Comp wise.

like

A only really exists in niche fields. It was pretty much the path I took in patent prosecution. Most of my friends who went to small firms that pay decently ended up still working 2000 hours, but my firm requirements are 1300-1500, and attorneys work 9-5, M-F (for the most part).

like

A is absilutely possible if your just looking at salary not bonuses. I have an 1850 requirement for bonus eligibility and make 80% of market but we don't have the insane COVID bonuses.

I'm curious. Why?

A any day of the week.

And yet you work at K&E?

likefunny

A sounds like a trap.

A is a trap because it’s never that, they trap you in there I make less than 6 figures in New York and bill 2200 with a 98% realization rate.. I was told work life balance that dosent exist in law.. at least billable law

A4 you need a new job. Your problem isn’t OP’s.

Considering offer as assistant controller at a small HF shop. Currently audit A2, will be promoted to S1 this Summer, and in HCOL market. No CPA. Haven't gotten the details yet, but recruiter sent me for 95-100 base, expecting ~20% annual bonus, full medical dental, free lunch and gym FWIW. Is this low? Is it worth sticking around 1 more year as senior for potentially better? The position has a lot of growth potential, as the shop is quickly expanding. What other factors do I consider?
