What would you do? I was offered an internal position and the transition plan is one month. The transfer is relevant to my background and would be the same pay. However, I was just offered more money (53% increase) from a different consulting firm. Both have the same WLB, similar benefits, and allows remote work. Leaning towards more pay but worried I’ll burn bridges.

People talk about burning bridges like it's a bad thing, but when Cortes landed in the new world, he purposefully lit his ships ablaze so that the only direction would be forward, and to victory. Hope this helps

likefunny

53%?! That’s almost bridge burning money to begin with. how do you think you’re burning bridges by just leaving? Assuming giving adequate time to roll off and are respectful about it

like

I feel you, but I think you need to cultivate more of a mercenary mindset in this economy. Follow the money my friend. Unless you think you’d be able to get a 50% raise while staying in your position at PWC, it’s hard to see how it would be worth it to pass up this exceptional outside offer

like

Jfc dude 53% increase, how is this even a consideration

Just an exclamation. “Jesus fuckin Christ” to get technical

like

That is a life-changing salary increase no matter how much you currently make

Did you want the internal position? What type of role is it? I’d jump to the other consulting firm honestly - feels like that will leave more doors open and if it’s more money with comparable WLB, it feels like you have nothing to lose (and won’t burn bridges either). Congrats!

like

Gotcha. In that case, I think you should hop to the other firm - better to be revenue generating (esp in these times) all else equal, and you can always get data experience from there (or somewhere else). The pay bump will give you more flexibility to make choices between even better options down the road too.

Do you want to spend your career at PwC? If that’s not an explicit goal, and the other firm is in line with your core values, desired lifestyle, long term career goals, and you really like the people (these are my main criteria; idk what yours are), then absolutely jump ship. Keep in mind if you have a few strong relationships (mentors, friends) they will endure this move-on; it’s a good career move. In terms of other friendly relationships with partners and directors, etc, yes those will likely not endure but what are they worth to you? Other thoughts: -how long at PwC? Consider wealth builder and what you have vested -if you want to stay at PwC use this offer to negotiate a higher salary, if you’ve not already

PwC is a great company and has opened a lot of doors and learning opportunities, but I do feel that I’m underpaid. I don’t know my new group very well at all since it’s a staggered transition plan from my old role to my new role and I’m still supporting the old group. I’ve been at PwC for 3 years. Pretty sure they would not approve a salary match because this group has already let a few folks go and times are tough w covid and budgets

Congrats!!!!

Everyone at PwC will be supportive of your move into a new role - that’s the type of characters we have here. We look out for your best interest and making this move sounds like it’s in your best interest. Congrats and good luck!
