That’s basically my FIRE number, so… that’s what I’d do. Cut housing and other costs (how on earth are you spending $1k/mo on utilities, insurance, and subscriptions? guessing that includes home, family health, and vehicles), be done. But you mention family, so assuming that isn’t an option. Sabbatical is definitely a good idea as long as you use the time to clear your head and figure out priorities. Also, if you are on the verge of quitting the job anyway, talk to them. See what ideas they have or what they can do. You have nothing to lose at that point.

I rounded up. There's some healthcare in there but also multiple smart phones, internet, Netflix, etc. and some municipal taxes that are styled as usage-independent utility bills. Garbage, gas, water, sewer, electric. Law license. Car insurance. Adds up. Depends on where you live, too. I think my electric in one city was over $300/month even when no one was in the apartment for a month at a time. Basic internet was over $200 and you need that for work. Monopolies are monopolies.

I think I would try to find a less taxing job, whether doing the same type of work or different. For me, I don’t want to take a huge hit to my income until my kids are out of college, or at least far enough through that we know our savings will cover the cost. Maybe take a short sabbatical if you’re really burned out. But with the financial situation you’ve described, I wouldn’t feel like I’m close to coasting or throwing in the towel entirely.

36 and had 950k net worth (me alone, not counting my husbands’ NW since we invest separately). I took a pay cut for a less stressful job, but still a high enough salary to cover all expenses + investing goals. I wanted to be home and less stressed out NOW while my kids are young vs full FIRE when they’re teenagers and don’t want to spend time with me anymore

Just take a less stressful job.

Downgrade your expenses and live modestly so you aren’t killing yourself when your kids are little and need you. I get that’s not the FIRE principle, but they are only little once. Also, what’s the benefit of hitting FIRE at 40 if you have a stroke before then and can’t really enjoy it? Spend your money on things that give them experiences that enhance their knowledge and perspective of the world and potentially give them a leg up when it is time to apply for college/scholarships.

Sell the absurdly expensive house, move somewhere with a reasonable cost of living, and retire in luxury.

like

House is inflation hedge and a ticket to good schools. It actually appreciates faster than the post-tax interest plus prop tax (on historical average) so it’s making money proportional to the cost. Only place I can find with a similar cost to schools ratio is Evanston outside Chicago and that’s a worse deal bc of the tax rate.

Is the housing expense a mortgage (i.e., building equity)? Any debts? Income? All necessary to know to answer

Possibility of quasi coasting by switching jobs still in your industry but lighter hours to avoid burnout? Assuming you’re in law based on title. I feel like there are plenty of 40 hr/week in house/govt jobs that still pay 6 figs thus bringing your HHI to a level where you can afford present expenses but continue saving. Maybe you can’t RE too early, then, but maybe you wouldn’t want to if you had a much lighter workload

like

Work a few more years. You mentioned your take home is mid 6 figures, and spending 9k a month, so you should be saving well over $100k per year? Seems like you could hit your figure by 45. If you take a sabbatical you will just be in the same situation later, but your skills may be less sharp. Of course, you’re in a very good situation overall, so all options are on the table.

like

At the rate you’re going you’ll be dead from stress before you can enjoy your wealth. Cut where you can, find a reasonable job for a bit, and get your health and family back to a great place.

like

I would get an easier job that’s at least enough to cover your expenses and then just let your investments grow by themselves.

I am in a similar situation. Burned out, switched jobs. At the new job some things are better, some are the same. Will see what happens.

If possible, I would get a sabbatical or long break to think clear and get my priorities and options. Even 4-5 days off by myself in a different environment can help. Options- 1.less stressful and more 9-5 job within current field with less money 2. Possible part time with current job 3. Transition to another less stressful field 4. Just quit and enjoy life … and let the unexpected solution show up

He said that “wouldn’t work.” After our phone call, I got an invite for a zoom conference with my boss and an HR rep!? They’re infringing on my rights by requiring a vaccine. I've had a complaint made against me with HR because, when compiling names for a congratulatory launch announcement, I alphabetized the names. Someone who worked very hard on the project had apparently put their own name on top of the list intentionally and was miffed when it was moved down the list by the bad luck of their last name. I offered to reach out and apologize 1:1 just to be gracious - they said no and requested a 3-way mediation follow-up. Discuss.
