It does not excuse inappropriate workplace behavior. You have no obligation to be this person’s therapeutic punching bag.
Reach out to HR. The director has cited a protected employment class. You need to involve the people who are trained in appropriate policies around such matters.
I would be out like a light. Your company choosing to allow you to receive that type of treatment to protect another one is not an org I would wanna work for!
