What would you do? Option 1 - mgr of fin. Rep, supposedly opportunities to open up for Dir level once Company goes public through a SPAC, good work-life balance near term, Company will be making decision any day. Option 2 - dir. of fin. Rep, company already went public through SPAC, building out acctg dept, some issues to fix. Longer hours in near term, expected to be invited in round 2 of intrviews. If you had an offer from company 1 and still waiting on Company 2, if you had offer from Co 2?

I would not get involved with a post-public SPAC. There has been too much cheap money on the table so SPAC activity has been off the charts as app developers and other startup guys look to cash in on investor appetite.

However, these companies went SPAC instead of IPO for a reason. A lot of them are going to end up crashing into money pits so career longevity is questionable.

Additionally, since the SPAC will already have happened by the time you get on board, any stock based comp you get is already going to be at the grossly inflated SPAC value and likely to decrease in price as the froth subsides.

It's like getting in on a pyramid scheme when the pyramid has already been built.

I would have to understand the company and its business model as well as understand its path to profitability to get involved.

Good points here, but there are career paths within private equity companies to be a 1-person shop and hop around after acquisitions. Usually you can demand large contingent bonuses when you hit the Director / VP level. If that’s the route you want, then who cares if the company crashes - it’s good experience. But if you want a career at one place, then agree.

I would add I'm in a smaller metro area so director/manager of financial reporting positions are finite

Are you getting shares on Option 1 pre-SPAC? Because if so, then that’s a no brainer.

You’ll be fine. I was thinking the same thing a month ago before I got an offer I liked. If you’re good at your job and go to a Company that compensates on value you’ll be fine wherever you go. Just focus on the Company industry, size, etc. Feel free to DM me if you want to discuss more!

This is a question which I'm curious about people's thoughts. Mostly reflecting on the past since I'm way too far in audit to make a career change. Did I make a mistake by not trying for law school? I took the LSAT when I was a first year associate and got a 168. At this point, the score expired and would need to retake. I know law is riskier than audit.
